iPad is really expensive for what it is. Samsung, Sony, Asus, and even Kindle Fire are all way better value.

The Kindle has limitations, so make sure you carefully evaluate it before buying one. I would normally recommend Samsung, but their service plans are terrible. That said, the iPad is versatile, and there are many apps. IT really depends on how/where the tablet will be used.

Oh my....HANDS DOWN.....Asus Transformer, WITH the additional keypad. We OWN a I pad 2. Very nice toy. We own an I pad 1, simpler nice toy.

I needed a REPLACEMENT for my REAL computer..something that COULD surf the net and SEE all the videos posted using FLASH (as MANY, MANY still do). I did not appreciate the "no go" screens on the I Pad.

Also, a virtual screen keyboard is NOT a keyboard you can work on./ If you are wanting to give hubby a REAL laptop replacement, that has SPEED, POWER, amazing graphics, FULL expandability with cards (not available on the iPad either) and FLAWLESS performance, there IS only ONE CHOICE...the ASUS.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE mine. My I pad 2 is collecting cobwebs in the closet. My Asus is in my briefcase or IN MY HANDS, every day...all day. TOY or TOOL. Choice is yours. They are NOT EVEN COMPARABLE.

The ASUS keyboard alone makes it MUCH longer on battery life, Memory capability and the ability to use the device to create mail, documents, everything. Oh...and the overall speed, graphics..etc, on the ASUS make the Apple look anemic.

NO question, hands down. ASUS, all the way. This, from someone who OWNS BOTH...side by side!!!!!

Oh...don't let the Apple fans talk to you about "how many apps" are out there. I have not found ONE thing I wanted to do, from watching TV, to Listening to tunes, to playing games..etc, that there was an android app for. There are MORE android apps being added every single day then there are Apple apps. Just the facts.

I pad, like ALL Apple products now, while well built, are MUCH more expensive, for LESS power and function. They are living off their name at this point, and I don't think that is going to last. My daughter, who was an APPLE FAN for ages, finally said "forget this" trying to interface with the school PC's using her Apple Powerbook ($1800), so she bought a Toshiba ($400) and is THRILLED with how well it work!!!! Finally, Windows 7 is what Windows was always supposed to be. Apple has no big advantage in ANY area anymore.

Awesome for goofing around and reading limited sites online. Try typing a paper, viewing professional (or news) videos (most still FLASH), or downloading a CADD program for 3 D rendering, that takes THREE TIMES the built in, and NON expandable memory on the I pad 2 (I tried it, FAILED) which is how I ended up with that AMAZING ASUS Transformer.

Apple is a VERY slick toy. I love toys, but that IS what it amounts to. Professionals I travel with daily have their LAPTOP (for REAL work) and an IPAD to play with (music, light surfing). Sorry, I have the ASUS to play with (better, faster graphics and WAY more power) and to WORK WITH...with FULL real expansion memory keyboard (takes MINI and FULL SD cards).

SO? How is the I Pad 2 better in ANY way??? Not ONE single parameter or function is better on the I Pad 2. Again, I know, I have BOTH sitting right here.

I voted apple, but that's because that is my choice. It really depends on what your husband will want to do with it. The Samsung I found heavier, the apps are the same and some of them are free where they are paid on iPad. It's very hard to watch videos that aren't on YouTube on the Ipad, you need to download Flash software. The camera is not too terrible on the iPad and there is an adapter you can buy that easily transfers your pictures to and from the device; very handy and inexpensive. The iPad is much more user friendly in my opinion and I prefer the user interface. It really all depends on what your husband would use a tablet for.

iPad 3?

If you are considering purchasing a tablet, I'd suggest waiting 1 week.

Apple has a major product announcement media event scheduled for Wednesday, March 7. Many speculate they will be announcing the new and improved iPad 3.

The Apple iPad dominates the tablet market. I'd at least wait to see what they are announcing before purchasing at this point.

Kindle is a reader with VERY limited and SLOW web browsing and only a TINY menu of apps that the book seller had vetted. It is NOT a tablet in any sense. It is a reader. The I pad is a limited tablet. The Samsung is simply inferior in every way to the ASUS. I looked at it prior to buying the Transformer.

True...new apple is coming. Will it really be a game changer? We shall see. They REALLY need expandable memory and FLASH support. If they did those two things, we would have something to talk about.

WHY????? Again, I have both and there is not ONE SINGLE THING the Ipad 2 does better or more then the ASUS. The ASUS kicks butt in 1000 areas that the APPLE cannot do at all...again, productivity typing, flash viewing...etc.

WHY does apple have such fans??? Odd.

You cannot load FLASH on the I pad 2. It is not a supported format, unless you know something I don't??? Since I own an I Pad, I would LOVE for it to support flash.

Game changer? Yes! The iPad has in fact...proven to be a game changer, just like the iPod and iPhone before it. The numbers tell the story. There was zero demand for tablet computers until the iPad. Apple created the demand and is dominating the market. Everyone else is trying to catch up.

Expandable memory, why?
Apple has sold over 500 million iPods, iPhones and iPads without expandable memory.

And flash support? Flash is dead. It died last year when it's creator Adobe announced they would no longer develop flash for mobile apps. They are switching to HTML5.

Duff,
How soon do you need it? The Apple product announcement will begin at 9am PST. Apple will likely close their online store for about 2 hours during Apple's product announcement. Tim Cook will announce pricing and availability details during his presentation. If you're interested, you can check their online store later in the day Wednesday. They'll have the details on whatever is announced.

Sometimes when Apple announces products, they are available on their website shortly after the announcement. Other times it may be a number of days or weeks.

Good luck with whichever product you choose to purchase and to your husband.

I have the ASUS Transformer and LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!! Ipad's are really overated. You can do so much more with the transformer than you can the Ipads. They're ready to go without having to update anything unlike Ipads. My husband is a computer guy and he has to deal with Ipads at work and is SO glad that he has the Asus because THEY don't give him trouble and he can do anything he wants UNLIKE Ipad. To listen to music we don't have to download ITUNES, we can just listen to music. Asus is much better and that's coming from my experience with using it and my husbands experience with having to fix or update the Ipads all the time at work. I don't mean any offense when I say this, but Apple fans jump on the apple bandwagon and think apple is the only way to go, but that's just not the case.
