I was sitting in the library the other day, and I overheard a small club debating over who wrote the more enthralling occult novels. They essentially had it boiled down to two authors. I know where I fall, how about you all?
Anne Rice or Stephenie Meyer?

Personally, I'd rather read Laurel K. Hamilton than Stephenie Meyer, but an Anne Rice novel is always welcome.

Anne Rice all the way! I've been a fan since I was in high school
04/09/2011
I really don't feel that these two authors are comparable at all. We're talking a seasoned, very experienced author versus someone totally new to the game. Plus their style is completely different as well. I've read several of Rice's novels as well as most of Meyer's, but I enjoy them for different reasons. If I want light reading with high entertainment value I read Meyer. If I want a deeper, more thoughtful and mature read, I turn to Rice.

They're virtually unrelated.
I read Laurel K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris, too, but they're all for different reasons.

I've never read a Meyer book, but I doubt I would enjoy from comments made. I enjoy a deep read. Annie Rice is one of my favs for sure. She has somewhat changed subjects in the last few years, but the writing is still incredible!
04/09/2011
Rice before she got religious.
04/09/2011
Neither. Bram Stoker all the way.
04/09/2011
Had to look up who Meyer was. Twilight, yes. I've watched the first movie and part of the second. Light and entertaining. Young vampire love always is!

04/09/2011
Some of Rice's books go out on a "flowery" limb. But I doubt Meyer would EVER produce something as seductive as "The Vampire Lestat" in her career. I read and enjoyed Meyer for what it was.....a teenage story of forbidden love.

Anne Rice all the way. She writes well. And she also wrote the Beauty series, which puts a kinky, erotic twist on the Sleeping Beauty story. Amazing. I highly recommend it if you're into BDSM and/or fantasy.
My favorite vampires, however, will always be those penned by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. I used to read her as a teenager and she has a special place in my heart, since she was a young author too

christene feehan or laurell k hamilton

Umm they are not in the same class at all. I do not know how anyone is using them in the same breathe like they are comparable. I like Hamilton as well. Some of my favorites now are J.R. Ward, L.A. Banks, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Charlaine Harris.
07/21/2011
I'll admit to having read the first half of the first Twilight book, and actually kind of enjoying it, but it just doesn't feel like she's writing about vampires. I wonder why she didn't just go ahead and create a new kind of creature. That, and by the halfway point, the real plot STILL hadn't picked up. Seriously, it shouldn't take that long.
I haven't read any Anne Rice, but I've heard that her early stuff was really good.

08/24/2011
I voted Stephanie Meyer. I liked the books, my own personal preference. I didn't like their lack of fangs or their sparkling or their lack of neck chomping but, eh *shrugs* I enjoyed it nonetheless. I haven't read any Anne Rice novels, just never been interested in actually checking them out whenever I've come across them. All I think of when I see an Anne Rice book is that horrible movie 'Interview With A Vampire', total suckfest, and not in the good way. Now personally I'd rather read a Lynsay Sands or J.R. Ward book.

First of all, I'm old enough that I've already seen the vampire trend 3 times. Secondly, she's a terrible writer... (I looked at her book for adults in the store for a moment to see what all the hype was about & literally didn't make it through the preface).
Anne Rice is actually also a terrible writer, these days. Her style totally changed after Queen of the Damned. I read about 2 more of the Vampire Chronicles after that, but only the first 3 would I ever consider rereading.
And I really don't "get" Harry Potter either... it's like... "The saga of a boy you want to slap just by looking at him... with... a magic stick!"
Heehee. I actually like fantasy stuff, I'm just very picky about it. I'm way over the done-to-death stereotype stuff.
(I have to admit the upcoming Twilight movie sounds slightly intriguing just because there's supposed to be interesting sex and gore... but I think I'd be too annoyed by the rest of it to enjoy the sex and gore... awh.)

I am really surprised that the club had it down to Stephanie Meyers as one of the most enthralling of that genre. I went through Twilight and had no interest in continuing the series.
04/05/2012
Anne Rice of course, but that isn't to say I didn't enjoy reading Twilight.
04/05/2012
Anne Rice is definitely one of the most well known, if not best fantasy novelists out there. Meyer, in my opinion, is a bit of a fad right now and doesn't have the writing skills to stand up to the greats. Maybe it was her editor's fault, but when I can't read a book due to its grammar and spelling, that REALLY speaks ill of the author to me.
04/05/2012
I've only read a few by each author. But I prefer Anne Rice over Meyers vampire books. But I loved Meyers "Host." AWESOME BOOK!
04/05/2012
I suppose I'd rather read Anne Rice, since I loathe Twilight, but really neither. I'd take an eighteenth/nineteenth century vampire story over a modern one any day.

I loved Anne Rice as a preteen and teenager! I have since discovered a lot of more awesome authors, of course, and I realize her books aren't really the best thing in the world. But going back and rereading, I didn't regret my interest in them, and I still love many of the characters she has created.
Stephanie Myers, on the other hand... I wasn't able to even finish one of her books. I threw it across the room in disgust and then reminded myself I had borrowed it and returned it to the owner before I could cause damage to it.

Personally, I think they both kinda suck. No pun intended.
10/16/2012
Anne Rice is definitely the more talented author. But, while I don't like her books all that much, Stephanie Meyer writes in a style that is much easier to read and got a ton of people reading who normally don't touch books. I have some respect for both authors.

Ok I liked the first twilight book but in over all appeal and longevity Anne Rice is just amazing! Though sometimes she starts dialoging too much about life and the universe and blah blah blah.

Oh my gosh, I agree... I LOVE Laurell K. Hamilton. Her books are a lot racier too! :3
10/26/2012
I'd take Laurel K. Hamilton over either one of them, but I do enjoy Anne Rice. Stephanie Meyer is just crap, though.
10/26/2012
Anne Rice, though I mostly read fantasy novels like The Legend of Drizzt, so it feels kind of weird to be reading her stuff. lol

No question. Anne Rice.
11/13/2012
I like them both. But when it bottles down the the vampire book aspects, Anne Rice for sure. I still very much liked reading Twilight, but more so Interview With a Vampire.
11/14/2012
Anne Rice all the way.
11/14/2012
The only thing in common is vampires. Anne Rice is in a whole other league.
11/14/2012
Stephenie Meyer writes glorified fanfiction. Anne Rice actually knows what she's doing.

Don't particularly like either author for various reasons - Meyer because of the generic, badly written bullshit and Rice because I don't particularly like her style - good storyline just... not an engrossing read for me.
Still, neither author is really... people you could compare. Meyer is a young adult fiction author who feeds on the pop culture desires of teenaged girls...
Rice is a bit of a perv with her stories and they definitely carry deeper, more mature themes.

Plus their style is completely different as well. I've read several of Rice's novels as well as most of Meyer's, but I enjoy them for different reasons. If I want light reading with high entertainment value I read Meyer. If I want a deeper, more thoughtful and mature read, I turn to Rice.

Lestat vs Edward? Does that question really even have to be asked?

I haven't read any Stephanie Meyer, but I can't imagine her topping Anne Rice.

Noooo I absolutely detest Meyer.

Stephanie ugh... it's glorifying and abusive relationship. At least Rice is open about when her relationships are abusive.
12/12/2012
i enjoyed stephanie as well

Anne Rice's vampires just seem more...real. Not many humans in the books and they are sexual without sex. I love it. Her vampires are just so seductive and sexy!
But she is a religious person now and doesn't write vampire stuff anymore.

Two different kettles of tea entirely, but Anne Rice easily. That being said, as I've grown older and my tastes have developed I've Seen Anne Rice as much less than the literary genius I used to think she was. She's great because her stories and characters shine through some often unnecessarily purple prose, but she's never really been a master of the writing craft.
Stephanie Meyer is a joke.

Anne Rice, hands down. I don't think the two authors are even comparable though. They're on completely different levels!

Honestly I'm going to have to go with Stephanie Meyer only because I've only ever read Twilight and nothing by Anne Rice. Although, this isn't to say that I like Twilight. It's just that I can say I know one and not the other
