I know that many players can costumise subs... But you can't do the same with burnt materials... ~sighs

Actually, I always hated that black background. Most subtitles I see nowadays are white with a thin black outline on the lettering (so white objects won't interfere) or yellow (and thus unlikely to be disrupted by stuff on the screen). I'm cool with this.

On mine I can change the background and the text style / size so that is cool but it only works on certain programs.

I'm not all that tech savvy when it comes to my tv, so when I'm watching a foreign movie it irks me when I can't read the subtitles because they blend in with the background!

I hated that black thing, it was ugly and blocked out almost the whole bottom of the screen! the simple words are much less obtrusive
