I often like hybrid classes that can cast damaging spells, as well as heal.

If you're looking into a fighter, look at Druid/Monk. So broken!

I didn't need to beat up people to get out of trouble ... although my group did claim I had a weapons grade voice.

Depends on the game really but in the traditional RPG games I'd say fighter or paladin.
