Just finished watch Synecdoche, New York. It wasn't terribly depressing, but grave. Very grave indeed. I also just saw A Single Man, Helen, Manic, The Headless Woman, and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Any other goodies? Even ones like Before Sunrise/Sunset. I'm feeling like good thinking movies during the holidays.

Not sure if it falls exactly into the category you're going for or not, but Children of Men is a good one.

These may not appeal to your taste but when it comes to movies I cannot help but put my $0.02 in on the matter.

link - Intact or Intacto. An excellent film about fate and luck - who has it and who doesn't. You really have to pay attention because the plot isn't consistant but it really makes you think about life, or at least it made me think about life.

link - In The Realm of The Senses. Based on a true story. The power dynamics of a pre-war Japanese master/servant relationship will definitely have you thinking about things a little deeper.

link - A Better Place. It's Kevin Smith's finest, in my opinion. Need I say more? Very dark.

link - In The Bedroom. Very poignant look at what a husband and wife experience after the tragic loss of their son at the hands of his lover's ex-husband.

link - Closer. This movie didn't get nearly enough attention. I think it's an accurate portrayal of how real adults in real relationships deal with adultery.

link - Match Point. You'll never guess what happens, it definitely isn't what you think.

FWIW, I found Precious to be gut-wrenching with gratuitous graphic abuse. If you or someone you are viewing with has been sexually abused, raped, physically or mentally abused I strongly caution the choice to see this film. The end does not at all justify the content. This is coming from someone who owns a copy of Irreversible and Caligula.

That is definitely a good warning.
Thanks for adding that.

Any time. I think Hollywood did a pretty good job of keeping the content under wraps. I was mortified when the real story unfolded while watching it with my mother, an abuse victim. It was even more awkward because she isn't the type of person who watches movies in the first place but she really really wanted to see it. I'll never forget it as long as I live.

I'm all for freedom of expression, exposing the horrors of human nature; I am not about hiding the content when viewers could potentially be traumatized.

My...I am talkative this morning. I remembered one more. Happy Endings. Very good movie about a woman who gave up her baby when she was a teen and how it affects her adult life.

I haven't watched it yet, but want to see The Road.
I read the book a few years ago. It is the most bleak and depressing book I have ever read, but starkly lovely.
