Remakes: Hooray or no way?

Other, it really depends on the movie, some are good, some aren't, and I don't care when they are made.

I've always felt sentimental about the original production.

I agree with this. Sometimes remakes are great, sometimes they aren't. Some remakes are better than the original and some aren't.

Remakes are really hit and miss for me. Some of them are real gems but other times they can be pure garbage. My only pet peeve is when Hollywood remakes a film from another country and then tries to "one up" it by slapping as much special effects into a remake as humanly possible (Eg: The Grudge, Let The Right One In, etc). I've never seen it work and it just makes the American film industry seem childish.

They don't always suck. I usually end up watching them unless they look blatantly horrible.

It depends how well they do it. IF they remake a classic, that's dumb, it will never live up to the original. But if they take a good idea that was done poorly in the past, it could be great. Just depends.

I like some of the new remakes. I didn't like the planet of the apes remake that was nasty

Remakes can be good and bad. It's on an individual basis. With one show that I love, it's wonderful when it gets remade every decade or so because I get to see another side to it. I enjoy seeing special effects and sets get better as well.

If they handle it correctly and try not to improve and make it they're own then it can be good
07/12/2012
it depends on how it done, some are really good a lot suck just like anything else.

I agree that it really varies by how the remakes are done. I also believe when they were done to be important. If it's been less than ten years, you're pushing it! Why not just watch the original?
Sometimes remakes can improve on the first. This takes an understanding of what was good, really honestly good, about the first and what was bad, then working around the good to edge out the bad. I once saw a non-musical version of Sweeny Todd. Sounds like blasphemy, right? Wrong! It actually focused heavily on story and used great acting to drive a surprisingly intense film. It knew what worked in the musical (theme, intensity, and being unflinching about content) and removed the intentional distractions the musical added in (like the whistle jump scares) for a good effect.
Remakes that take a totally different slant can also be good if a lot of heart and care to make it stand on it's own is put in. The remake of Little Shop of Horrors is a good example. The first was a barebones horror flick that wasn't funny (unless you count narm). It was fast paced, gritty and often unpleasant. The remake recognized the original was ridiculous and decided to latch onto the siliness and run by making it a musical. The result? Even better than the first!

As a horror movie fan I have seen some AWESOME remakes...but, in general, its gone too far. I don't think that every classic horror movie needs to be remade. Be creative, people!

I generally don't like remakes. There are a few good horror remakes, but outside of that genre, they usually suck.

Generally I think that remakes of TV shows are okay. Like BBC's Sherlock and Doctor Who.

I usually find remakes just unnecessary.

Most remakes have seemed unnecessary, or are just done poorly.

I don't like remakes.

Not the biggest fan of remakes but I can put up with them if they are good ones and they just don't fuck up the entire vision of what the movie or book were supposed to be. Now, they do end up messing everything up even in books turned movies.
12/31/2012
I do like a lot of the new remakes but there are a few movies they should have just left alone.
12/31/2012
I don't mind remakes as long as its in the spirit of the original and done very well.
01/01/2013
It depends on the movie and how it is done

I say I don't like remakes but there have been a few I have liked. I watch a lot of old movies (on TCM) and it is amazing how many movie remakes there are.
