Shark Week...Love it or hate it?

Contributor: Ganconagh Ganconagh
A new Shark Week starts tonight on Discovery. While some of the shows are sensationalized, I find sharks fascinating creatures and enjoy Shark Week. How about you?

We enjoy it, however the programming has gone WAY downhill over the last decade or 15 years. It used to be much higher quality, more educational, less sensational and more of it. Now they barely do 2 shows a night, and they're just sensational - mostly about shark attacks. They used to talk about conservation and more species of shark. Now they generally focus on attacks, and the species that are the most likely culprits: great whites, tigers, bulls, etc.

I think the advertising makes many of the shows look like someone's about to be eaten (they've got to draw in viewers somehow), but the actual programs tend to show that large sharks are not senseless killing machines. Even if someone gets bit, it's generally acknowledged that either the animal made a mistake or was sick.

Of course, I think if Mike Rutzen keeps playing with fire we will eventually get a Shark Week special called, "Eaten Alive."

I love Shark Week. All of the programming might not be as educational as it once was, but I enjoy all of the Internet hoopla that makes it a holiday of sorts, and I think overall it's a good thing.

Neutral. I've never watched shark week, so I don't really know what it's all about (other than sharks).

Air Jaws Apocalypse was very good. "Colossus" was an extremely cooperative shark, lol.

It is amazing watching these sharks breach.

Meh, I'm impartial to it. I watch the Discovery channel often already and could care less if it is shark week or not.

Dr. Ruth is getting in on the Shark Week action. You can read about her Twitter feed at io9.com.

Quotes so far from Dr. Ruth Westheimer?@AskDrRuth:

"If 9 mos from now there are less births it will prove my theory re Shark Week & erections."

"For those who missed my Tweet of last wk I said Shark Week wasn't good as foreplay as penises don't respond well to shark attacks"

"Any woman who wants to avoid sex for a nite only has to play the Jaws theme music, dum dum dum dum"
