Should I get the MP3 or the CD album?

Contributor: Ryuson Ryuson
There's a new album I want out that's $6 for the MP3 album, and $12 for the CD album. I LOVE having the physical CD, so someone suggested that I could buy the MP3 album and burn it, but then I'd have to buy a blank CD and it would be a lower quality music file.

What would you guys do?

I like having the original CD, that way I can play in my truck or the house radio, plus I like to listen to the whole album. The wife likes to burn disks so that she has only the songs she wants so she will buy the MP3.

Nothing beats having the actual CD!!
And plus, you can turn the songs you want onto your ipod into mp3's.

My issue with disc is they scratch so easily and the disc is ruined. The only way you are losing your Mp3 file is if your computer takes a crap.

Thanks for the response! I'm still leaning towards the CD, also because you get the art and the little booklet and everything!

Since you love the physical CD, then that's what you should get, so you can take your mind off it.

Option: Buy the CD and rip it to your computer. If something happens to the computer, you still have the disc.

Buy the LP. Hehe.

You should buy the CD if you really like having the CD. You should rip the files to your computer in case something happens to the CD. You can choose the bitrate of the files so if you have to burn a replacement it won't be poor quality!

I usually go for the CD, because of all the little extras that come with it. Plus, you could rip the audio to your hard drive so you've always got a back-up.

I typically value having a hard copy of an item at $5. since it's 6 dollars, i'd say pay the extra buck ad get the CD. if anything happens, you'll have a high quality backup.

I love having a physical CD. and if it's an album from an artist I want to support I always buy the album. I always burn a copy of the one that I buy so I don't scratch the original. My CDs tend to slide around on the floor of my car and get scratched sometimes.

I'd go for the CD. Sound quality is so much better; MP3s are dithered down to save space. You can always rip the CD to MP3 and have both, as others have said. I'm a bit of a collector, so I burn a copy of the CD for my car so I don't have to worry about it getting scratched. The original stays in the house.

Oh really? I've never had a problem with quality but if you like the songs, then just get the cd and rip it.

Most of the music I buy is classical, so I end up getting the CD and ripping it myself. I rarely LISTEN to CDs, our new stereo doesn't even play CDs. XD I just rip them to MP3 myself. Not a lot of classical music (proportionate to the amount released) is released direct to MP3 yet.

However, I haven't personally noticed a quality difference between buying CD and buying MP3. I guess my ear just isn't that discerning. If I do buy non-classical music I tend to buy individual songs, rather than whole albums, so I buy them as MP3s, to save money, so I'm not buying songs I don't like. Picky picky. XD

I used to buy the CD, enjoy it carefully, rip the music, and sell the CD to someone else. Nice thing is that CDs are always in demand by someone. I also end up not wnating to hold onto CDs for long as I move frequently.
