What is your take on Ayn Rand?

Contributor: <3BF <3BF
I hear Ayn Rand and her works (usually The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged) referenced all the time. People have told me she is their favorite author and her books are on many of those "greatest books of all time" lists, but personally I don't get it. Have you read Rand, what's your opinion and why?

I read The Fountainhead, Anthem, and Atlas Shrugged.
I personally feel her philosophy may sound nice in theory, but if implemented universally in the real world would cause the collapse of civilization swiftly and entirely. She reacted to one destructive extreme (communism) by suggesting an equally destructive opposite extreme.

I have not read her novels but I have studied her philosophy. I don't like her. I think she has some good points regarding egotism but other than that her philosophy is terrible. She miss represents human nature and her idea of an ideal society would be disastrous. I agree with Liewey she created a solution to communism by creating an equally extreme and dangerous philosophy on the other end of the spectrum.

Whats scares me is people and politicians take her seriously and want to create such a society or one inspired by her, yikes!!!

I'm reading Atlas Shrugged currently. As a book it's okay, but I hate her philosophy.

Agreed. I am only intrigued by the Fountainhead, because a band I like was into it at one time and inspired by it.
