Most definitely not. They would not have wanted me, and I'm not sure I would have wanted them.

I was for all four years. Captain my third and fourth year. I was the science geek, who was also little miss this and that, and always on the cheer squad. Never judge a book by it's cover.

In fact, all nine of our senior cheerleaders were National Honor Society members and every single one ended up getting their doctorates in some field!!! Not bad for a public, working class neighborhood high school.

I thought that way, till I learned who the girls on the Cheer Squad really were, and it was simply a great way to get a workout, on school time, and to socialize with most of the school who turned out for Football. All the groups, from Geeks to Greasers, Nerds to Jocks (in all fields) used to show up for those games. At the football games, we were all simply members of our school (who used to win state titles every year).

I wonder if there were more misconceptions about who "them" really were?

At our high school, it was the "scene" that almost every group showed up to, and thus, was a great time for people from all different "life groups" to mingle and be friends. Didn't matter if you were in Choir, or Art, Acting or Super Jock, when you came to the football games, everyone seemed to mingle and support our team. Made for a super nice high school experience.

I wasn't one but had friends who were. We didn't really have the tyical stereotype groups.

I was never really athletic, outgoing or self confident enough for that kind of thing. I much preferred having a couple friends from Drama and comic book club.

No. Our cheerleaders were glorified lap dancers. Our school marching band and track were the things you got into if you wanted to get noticed...

Me? I was anime club president.

My wife and daughter were both cheerleaders. There isn't a lot of respect out there for them. I can tell you from experience that they work very hard. It's an 11 month season. They start preparations in August, cheer for football and other fall sports - then go on to cheer for basketball and wrestling - then there is a competitive season where they travel to compete with other schools then wrap up cheering at spring sports. After cheering 3 years my daughter was so exhausted she opted out for her senior year.

Cheerleaders today are more like gymnasts than prima donnas.

I was too busy with band, but I have the utmost respect for the people that are able to do it, and take it seriously. Those girls (and guys!) are insane (in a good way).
