Do cruise ship vacations excite you or frighten you with the troubles the last few years?

Contributor: Martiniman Martiniman
My family has been on two cruise vacations without incident in the past 6 years, although now that we've discovered and enjoy all-inclusive resort vacations in Mexico, its likely we will never cruise again. Part of this is because of the cruise ship troubles the last few years and my wife is now turned off at the idea of a cruise.

In the last few years several ships have had mechanical troubles, breaking down and becoming stranded, leaving passengers with no A/C, running water or hot meals, to mention a few. The latest was this week when a Carnival ship became stranded in the gulf due to mechanical problems. Other issues have been ships running aground, sinking in storms and sickness breaking out on ships.

With all these issues as of late, does the idea of a cruise ship vacation still excite you or are you to frightened and concerned to cruise?

Well, I don't think I would want to go on one that strayed too far from the shore. I don't really think I would want to go on one at all really.

Considering the number of ships that come in and go out the port that I live nearby (and Port Canaveral isn't the only port in the US), the statics of that happening are the same as plane crashes - it's only because it's so rare that it gets national news. I don't worry about it. If I could afford it, I'd go cruising just to experience what luxury is like.

I've never really been interested but if I had to take a cruise it would be an Alaskan cruise where we would somehow end up at Denali National Park for a few hours.

We enjoyed our cruise and cannot wait til our daughter is old enough to go on one. Only a few more years. We want her to be able to do the kids events etc. The things happening aren't really that many when you realize how many ships are out there everyday without incident. I have an attitude that if its going to happen to you it will no matter what.

Would rather be on a nude beach in Jamaica. The idea of being on a ship for days just doesn't do it for us.

We've been on 3 Caribbean cruises and loved them all. we'd love to do it again - but I admit that the recent spate of illness and accidents has given us pause. We're not in a financial position to go on a cruise - but when we are, we'll have to reevaluate. We may decide leanright69 has it right - and just find a nice beach and stay there.

I have always wanted to go on a cruise but as of yet I just haven't been able to afford it nor do i want to go alone. Hopefully one day that will happen. Until then I will continue to dream!

I've been on two cruises and I'm looking into one for my honeymoon. Like Chili said, statistically, problems don't occur often at all. The media attention on the few mishaps that do occur make it seem like a bigger problem than it is.

The ocean terrifies me, but I think I'd be similarly scared no matter what the current 'trend' is.

Both but would still love to try it and see. My gf from work was supposed to be on the one that is on the news right now, she was real scared before then and now she's petrified

I would love to go on a cruise, just waiting for the right time. Problems on ships in the news does not scare me.
