Acid reflux

Contributor: Starkiller87 Starkiller87
So Ive been mia lately. Because I have the worst acid reflux known to man! It has been going on and off for a while now but the last week it has been brutal. I stay up all night sick, and it lasts all day. I went to a Dr. so I am trying medicine for a few weeks to change the amount of acid in my stomach. It gets so bad I want to go to the emergency room sometimes.

Anyone else have or had a problem with severe acid reflux?

I'm sorry you're going through this. My sister has severe reflux, as does a family friend. They both take Nexium (the little purple pill) and it seems to have corrected most of the damage caused by the acid and it's now manageable, but not completely gone. I wish you the best and I hope you get some relief soon!

(I hear a glass of iced water helps with the burning feeling, though it doesn't do much for the actual condition.)

Ill have to try the iced water thing, thanks. It just sucks because it hit me out of no where, I never had a problem before.

From what I understand, unless you're diagnosed with it as an infant, it usually does come out of the blue. Though, now that I think about it there might be some damage to the valve in your stomach that keeps the things inside of it where they're supposed to be and preventing them from trickling into the throat. That might be an avenue you could pursue as well. If you aren't satisfied with the treatment options provided by the current care provider, then I highly recommend getting a second opinion.

Try to stay away from acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits. A bland diet would probably help until the medications kick in as well. I really do hope you feel better soon!

I had this problem while I was pregnant. My husband told me about using baking soda. He use to work with this older guy who used it all the time. I finally decided that I had to try something. It works! Seriously you mix about a TBSP baking soda with water and drink it down. It will taste slightly salty, but you get a huge burp. Then it is all gone. It is the best way to get raid of it, that I found.

Ive been trying to avoid burping because of the acid acid part. I heard it can cause throat cancer if you continuously burp up the acid. Burping feels amazing though, but it is always short lived for me. I heard drinking ginger tea is supposed to be awesome as a natural remedy. But no where seems to carry it, I might have to buy fresh ginger and make my own.

my mom has had an acid reflux problem since she 1st got pregnant (sorry mom). she takes meds every day to keep it under control. she got it looked at 1 time & the doc said that hers had gotten so bad that it was starting to erode away the lining in her esophagus, & that she would probably eventually have to have surgery on it. that was a few yrs ago. luckily, the meds she is on keep it very under control.

I have issues with it right now because I'm pregnant. I eat tums like they're going out of style.

My oldest child had it since infancy. She now has an ulcer and is on the Purple Pill. Not having health insurance, she it only taking is sporadically, when this medication needs to be taken on a regular daily schedule to be helpful. It can actually heal ulcers and acid reflux.

Some ulcers are due to a bacteria called H. Pylori. The doc can test you with a breath test. You breathe into a bag, similar to the bag they use for Breathalyzer tests. If you have H. Pylori about 2 months on a special antibiotic, plus something for the acid reflux, like Prevacid will cure it.

She has tried ALL the home remedies and folk cures and "natural" medicines, and only the actual medicine helps her.

I've heard a couple different takes on this.

Thought 1: BASE! BASE! BASE! Drink all the alkaline things you can! Milk, TUMs, Rolaids, baking soda, etc. This will neutralize the acids.

Thought 2: When you feel heartburn kick up, take a tablespoon of white vinegar. Your mouth will clue the rest of you digestive system into "OH no! Acid!" and will do its own anti-acid things.

I was diagnosed with a high hiatal hernia a few years ago. I cut back on the soda and ate more base-y things. The tablespoon of vinegar usually does it for me though.

I have reflux and it gets so bad sometimes it feels like a heart attack because it feels like my chest is caving in. I've had it flare up for over a decade so I've got some tried and true things I do. Here they are!

Like J.R. said reduce your acid intake, this includes soda, acidic fruits (lemons, limes, oranges, etc) tomato sauce and anything spicy.

Drink plenty of milk and water

Stay somewhat elevated. When you lay flat on your back the acid can settle in the chest area and cause irritation. So sit up when watching T.V and at night prop your pillows so that your head and shoulders are above your chest. Keeps the acid flowing back in the right direction.

I took Nexium and prilosec (which are both now over the counter) but what I find works the very best and my doctor recommends in Zantac! Get the 150mg and take it twice a day till you feel better.

Hope this helps sweetie, and I feel your pain for sure, it can be miserable. Hope you feel better soon.

Hey! Have you tried Zantac? I know they are comparable and I started taking it instead of the purple pill when we didn't have insurance. Check it out and compare. The cost might be helpful. Nexium is expensive!

Sorry to hear that. I used to have a sever case of it, but it seems to have subsided for now (well, for the most part). The doc told me it is stress related?? And I know from personal experience that alcohol, spicy foods, etc. makes it worse. Milk seems to help me. I hope things get better for you.

I had a problem with helicobactor pilori for a while when I was little, and this gave me terrible reflux. I had some medicine that helped a lot! It's a lot better now.

I Got tested for an ulcer and it came out negative, so thats good. I have a feeling im having acid reflux and my anxiety makes it flare up worse. But i read that anxiety alone cant cause it. It wasnt that bad today while taking the medicine so hopefully tomorrow is another good day.
