How do you control acne?

Contributor: charletnarouh charletnarouh
I have had acne and pimples for as long as I can remember. Recently I started eliminating products containing chemicals, especially parabens, sulfates and cosmetic silicones. I switched to all natural products and for my facial care I started using Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean cleanser with tea tree and castille soap, Thayers Rose Witch Hazel alcohol free toner with aloe & vitamin E, and Desert Essence oil control facial lotion. I use Desert Essence night moisturizer twice a week. This regimin has almost eliminated my acne, even my worst trouble spots have improved dramatically in less than a month! I've tried Skin ID, Proactiv, Clean & Clear, Clearasil, Noxema a host of Neutrogena products. Nothing has ever made it better!

How do you control acne, pimples, blemishes, etc? What products or regimin work best for you? Have you ever found a natural product that shocked you by working better than a chemical or medical product or have natural products disappointed you?

I have two really good face washes- one clay based, one with tea tree oil that is a foaming cleanser. I wash twice in the morning (first wash removes dirt and second wash cleans pores), and exfoliate with a rice bran based exfoliant once a day to get rid of dead skin cells. The most important thing with oily or acneic skin, though, is to moisturize. Just because skin is oil rich doesn't mean it is moisturized, so find a good water based moisturizer. I have super oily skin genetically, and that's what I do. Hope it helps! Oh, and when I feel a pimple start to form, spot treat the area with benzoyl peroxide 10% (can be found at Walgreens), but don't get it on surrounding skin.

I'm a firm believer in "you are what you eat." I don't eat fried food, I stay away from sweets and try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. I noticed once a started eating healthier I stop breaking out.

I only get a bit here and there. I use the Target brand version of Cetaphil. I think it helps some.

I don't have acne but do have some blackheads. In April, I started using Equate (Walmart's brand) of ProActv's repairing lotion and cleanser. Best stuff ever. Each is just over $4. I call it a 'miracle in a bottle.' My skin has never looked better in my whole adult life.

I drink a LOT of water (>100 oz a day) and use the Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions line. The Burt's Bees is the only thing that has ever worked for me. ProActiv only made it worse for me.

These are great tips!! I just wash with water in the shower. I don't do anything, and I stay pretty clear of blemishes!

I had it bad, it was genetic. NOTHING helped over the counter. I had to get on Accutane and it really worked for me. I still get a few zits here and there but it's fine.
I use neutrogena's stress control line as well as clean and clear popped pimple relief which I find similar to the proactive mask.

I've tried the natural products without results. Now I use Clinique toner, Kate Somerville Detox face wash, Josie Maran argan oil moisturizer, Kate Somervile exfoliating acne mask, Josie Maran argan oil (night treatment), and sometimes the Kate Somervile oil free moisturizer. I also use Kiehl's Super Fluid sunscreen on my face because it's the only one that won't make my skin break out.
