My mom has one at the house, it's this little weather alert and hazard radio she got from NOAA, and it happens to be in the same room I've been working in. It's usually silent, until there's a weather alert, then it starts blaring some god awful noise (good for getting attention to alert you), but in the dead silence, I just about jumped out of my seat.
Does anybody else have one of these little radio things?
Not that one in particular, but we do have one. It seems to report the weather in every other county around us except ours. Plus they have Test Alerts on Wednesdays.
Honestly, as much as it annoyed the heck out of me today, I think I would still go out of my way to have one in my own home. They can be incredibly useful and clued me in to some serious weather situations I wasn't aware of, like I knew there were bad thunderstorms in the area, but didn't know about the tornado warnings.
I don't have one of those but I do have a CB/weather radio that used to belong to my father. I can listen to the emergency weather, and call out on the radio channels in case of emergency. it takes 9 AA batteries, or can plug in to the cigarette lighter of the truck. which is where I keep it.
Oh wow, I didn't even know people had those! I always just watched the morning news Then yell at myself when I went to the bathroom when my county flashed by! Grrr

Same here. I have never even heard of that. I listen to the radio in the morning. If something is going on mid day it will flash across the tv
I used to work in private security and they had one at the site. Yeah, it can scare the hell out of you if it's really quiet.
I've got the Weather Channel on in the background today. I figure at the very least if the radio decides to go off again, it won't scare me quite as bad.
My dad, who lives in the middle of nowhere, gave me one of these; The are nice for the most part. I really liked it when in the summer we are having severe weather and our satelite is out so we cant watch the TV we can still get updates. The only downside of it is, it will go off in the wee hours of the morning giving warning for counties miles from where we are. and for ours there is no way of turning it off so i have to resort to taking the batteriese out. Other than that, I love our little weather radio.

I was real happy to find out there was a snooze button on ours that lets me basically 'acknowledge' an alert that's gone off so I don't have to keep listening to it over and over and over.

No. I'm connected to noaa on my computer that lets me know what's happening. I know for a time in advance what's going on.

Ours has a snooze button too so we dont have to listen to it over and over again. But when the threat is no longer in my area and is moving away, it will still go off with alerts and that can get annoying.
