Anyone get severe canker sores?

Contributor: Elaira Elaira
Two days ago I started having that weird tingly sensation along the gumline in the back of my mouth. The next morning I woke up and was in pretty bad pain. It was more a stinging pain than a constant one. I thought I had a gum abscess for a bit because my gums were swollen around a partially erupted wisdom tooth. The pain didn't seem to be coming from back there, though. I've been constantly rinsing my mouth with hydrogen peroxide mouthwash since then. My cheek has been slightly swollen, it kinda hurts to swallow, but again, the pain is more burning or stinging and it feels more like an open wound than something else. Abscesses would hurt pretty constantly from the pressure, right?

I looked at what was going on and I saw that I had what looks like a canker sore outbreak running down half of my jaw to the back on that side and one starting to form on my cheek. It makes sense with the type of pain I'm in. That whole burning, stinging, only hurts when you move your mouth sort of thing. My lymph nodes aren't swollen which makes me think it's not an infection. My cheek is, but that could probably be from all of the irritation from the sores. No fever. It all goes away with Motrin and dabbing some numbing stuff where they are takes all of the crazy burning away, but not the soreness that I'm guessing is because of the irritation.

I don't know what to think of it. My diet has been crazy from not really eating anything for days and then eating as much as I possibly can. (Medication related.) I've also been under a lot of stress. These are both things that could cause this sort of thing.

Has anyone else had a serious outbreak of canker sores? How did you treat it?

I'd suggest eating a couple oranges or limes and seeing a doctor if it doesn't get better in a day or two.

I've never heard of this happening outside of House...

Try some B-stress vitamins (B6 and B12). That usually helps for me.

What you describe could be anything from an infection to an allergy. Swelling in soft tissue is always something to take seriously. I would have a doctor look at this. hopefully nothing, but not worth ignoring. Even your dentist could check this out...they ARE doctors. I hope all is well.

Bless your heart! It sounds like you are having no fun at all. I suffer from cold sores, but not quite as bad as yours. Hang in there!

My husband gets horrible ones! He uses anbesol for his mouth pain. I think he gets his due to stress and they can be quite large and painful. He uses a mouth wash with hydrogen peroxide just like you do. I hope that you're not having an issue with it any longer.
