Contributor: T&A1987 T&A1987
someone who knows exactly what's wrong with your life and scolds you for not following their sagacious advice. My gf's friend has been trying to get me to marry her or have a kid since two months after we started dating. She's convinced children and marriage are the ONLY way to happiness and refuses to relent. anyone have someone like this?

I don't know about you, but my family is a mix of chinese and vietnamese, so my whole family is like this, including my mom's friends.

Not really. I don't have pushy friends or family (anymore, not that I made it clear to them what I think of their suggestions). However, I guess I can be pushy with one of my friends who recently got involved with a guy who introduced her to drugs and shoplifting. I've mostly let it go, now.

I have had friends of friends of mine, who are often pushy like this. I tend to piss them off by bringing up statistics that show such views have no real basis, and that what works varies from person to person.
I have a few family members who try to tell me how to live my life and often it was them trying to talk me out of going to college (or continuing to go) until my son got older.

I'm Chinese, and my relatives have a totally different point of view than yours. When my current husband and I decided to get married, everyone suggested us to try living together first, before actually tying the knot. Of course we didn't listen, and we're still married after 18 years!

Your girlfriend's friend has no right to run your life, you're a grownup and should know how to handle your own affairs. I can't stand pushy people, the more they force me to do something, the more I'll purposely go the other way.

she doesn't run the affairs, she just interjects her opinion a lot, although it's slowed since she had her kid. if she ran anything, there would have been a kid or an engagement a while ago, or at least on the horizon, but there neither is going to happen soon, hopefully ever.

I have one friend who is convinced that her advice is mana dropped from her tongue onto planet Earth and should be treated so! It's really frustrating because she won't listen at ALL of you disagree!

I can't think of anyone who's currently in my life who does this, but I recently joined a belly dancing tribe who act like family, so maybe once I get to know them all better they'll start bossing me around.

I have been pressuring my sister and her husband to have kids sooner than later, but it's been in an affectionate, half-joking, make me some nieces and nephews already dammit! kind of way. Not like I'm actually acting like I know better than them about what will make them happy or when the best timing is for them. But they just announced over Christmas that they will start trying for a baby after this Summer

I don't have any friends or family trying to push me into anything like that - thank goodness!

that sounds like my aunt to a tee. She tries to run my family's lives (try being the key word) and tried to do the same with my parents' marriage. We've gotten to the point that we only acknowledge her during holidays and birthdays, so we don't have listen to her "helpful" opinions.

I don't have any "friends" like that, because those who try to run my life very quickly become ex-friends, and those who are still my friends realized that very quickly.

I can't stand when family and friends try to tell me that I need to have children, especially in that "fun, joking" (Read: Condescending, manipulative) way that they can sometimes have. It's annoying, since they know my views. That's even worse that just being bossy and giving bad advice, because you call them on it and they respond with "relax, I was just joking." Gaslighting sucks.

A few of my lover's friends were like that until I made explicitly clear that our relationship was none of their business and if they didn't fall in line, they would get the sharp end of my wit and ire. (In other words, I talked circles around their "logic" and used shock-tactics to get them to shut up... It was mean, but no worse than what they were doing to me.)
