Are you a serial hobbyist?

Contributor: Katastophy Katastophy
I tend to get completely obsessed with something, research it until I've seen all there is to see, and then move onto something else. I recently found the right term for this: serial hobbyist. So, are you a serial hobbyist? If so, what sorts of things have you learned about or discovered?

The major ones that I went through in the past two years were body mods, snakes, and now sex toys.

I had no idea what that meant when I clicked on the thread, but based on the definition it would seem I am. I more obsess over things than hobbies, like hang gliding or something like that, but I'm not adventurous enough for any "real" hobbies.

My obsessions have included, but are not limited to:

Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Bare Escentuals (or just makeup in general)
Coach
Sookie Stackhouse Series (aka True Blood for those that prefer the TV version to the books)
Car modification (ooh, that one is a real hobby!)

And, of course, sex toys.

Neither did I until I was speaking to someone who's daughter is also a serial hobbyist, who told me that that's what I am.

Just have to say, I love LotR! -cyber highfive!-

Yay! I have "hope" in Elvish tattooed on my shoulder and the Evenstar (designed from the flag Arwen carries at the end of RotK) on my lower back. So I combined body mods AND LotR. Hooray for double serial hobbies at one time!

It takes a lot for me to be passionate about anything.
Even the things I enjoy doing aren't necessarily things I am passionate about. I float between a few of the same hobbies; video games, reading, knitting, drawing, cooking. They're my go-to pastimes.

Being a serial hobbyist seems too intense for me.

That's amazing. If you have photos, you should post a link to them on my wall or message me. I would absolutely love to see this.

I don't think I count as a serial hobbyist, because I keep doing most of the things I pick up.

My hobbies don't waver all that much, so I guess I'm not.

I pick a new hobby every few months. My wife loves to tease me about it.

This definitely describes me. I have some constant interests, but for most things I go through phases.

I have a ton, and I mean a ton, of beads from when I thought I was going to be the next best thing in jewelry making. I made one bracelet and never made anything else. I should probably put them up on Craiglists for sale.

Absolutely! I wish I could find one thing I really enjoy and stick to it for a while. I have a love/hate relationship with knitting that has been going on for many years now, it's painful to think of the number of unfinished projects I've left.

I dont drop a hobbie and move on to another. I will just pick up more as I grow. I only drop ones that end up not being as fun as I had hoped they would be, but that is before I have invested too much time into them.

Yup! Tons of them but my most insane one is 'World Building' as I call it. I've been composing a world for the past four years, races, cultures, religion, traditions, war history, proper biomes, explainable evolution, and tons more. I have a problem, haha.

The others are:
Drawing
Writing
Cooking
Architectural Design(Surprising what you can learn from books/internet)
Sewing
Knitting

And the ones that are a little weird, but I find fascinating:
Serial killers
Horrific diseases
Post Mortum Photography

I switch around from intense project to intense project.

I don't have much time for hobbies, but I have gotten seriously involved in a few...then get bored and move on, so YES.

Yes! I went through body mods, synthetic dreads, and now toys.

I'm easily lured into hobbies. I find something fascinating (making toys, sewing, knitting) but after I have done it for a while the initial appeal fades and I give up on it for a while, but I usually come back to it later.

I have been crocheting for 4 years and knitting for 1 year. I am still learning things on both hobbies. I might have a crochet burn out and so I will start knitting. Then when I have a knitting burnout I go back to crocheting. I am also thinking about picking back up Plastic Canvas.

Oh yes, I kept a webpage for a sci-fi series for years, then moved on to numerology, then to icon-making, then self-portrait photography, and now here to do reviews.
