Are you an organ donor? Why or why not? For what?

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I would like to know if you are an organ donor. If you are not, what is your reason.

If you are, are their limitations to what you would donate?

I'm willing to give up anything for the simple reasoning that I'll no longer be needing any of it.

I have the same thoughts as Tori. I won't be using it anymore. Plus I'm too lazy to make an official list of limitations. I want to be cremated anyway, so hell, they can take every part of my body if they need it to save a person.

We both are it's just the right thing to do. I would like to think that if i had a child or someone close who is in need there are those willing to help. There are few limitations on helping or giveing.

Being raised by an RN, I tended to end up viewing the body as a wonderful machine with parts that are still useful after Life has left the body. If anyone is able to find my organs useful, they're welcomed to them.

(Although I will feel dreadfully sorry for them when the cellular memory kicks in.)

I hadn't thought much about donating organs, until recently...a friend of mine was shot and killed 7 months ago, and even though he was young, he had his organ donor card on him (here in Canada, or at least Ontario, I believe we get them with our first license?)...anyways, after being murdered "accidentally", my friend saved 5 other people's lives and I'm proud of him. It made me realize how important donating your organs is, and like someone above me said, I obviously won't be needing them anymore when/if that time comes. So why not?

I didn't know that, as an organ donor, it was up to you to "pick and choose." That seems sort of contradictory to the whole reasoning of being an organ donor. So yes, I am. My dad sort of got upset when I decided it, but I told him, "Someone else will be getting what they need to keep living. If I'm dead, at least let someone else enjoy the world for a bit more time."

I am not an organ donor in any official capacity. However I have let my family members know that those are my wishes. I have no desire to be stalked for my organs should I be a rare compatibility match for somebody. I may have read to many Michael Chrighton Books. However poor bastard will still be receiving my organs.

I am an organ donor. I saw first hand the miracle of new life provided to someone who was a recipient of a kidney. I also know a former teacher who is on a heart transplant list.

I am a donor, to me it seems silly that people even ask why. I mean I can't use them, they're going to try to do everything they can to save me, and if they can't I want then to save someone else. As long as there is nothing wrong with me when I die...aside from being dead...I want others to have a chance to live. I also donate blood when they let me, but I am chronically anemic, so that's less often then I'd like.

In case you've not seen it, there is a very funny organ donor ad out there, that didn't get the warmest of reviews, but I thought was good none the less: link <~click

I'm also a regular blood donor - I do double-red if you know what that is.

I am also registered with the blood bank as a potential kidney donor.

But that doesn't mean I want to donate any organs! My goal is to use them 'til they are no value to anyone else!

Here is a very good article about the myths surrounding organ donation. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend reading it. link

Woah... So weird that you made this thread. I am not an organ donor, but I've been meaning to sign up for years now. I'm also going to donate my body to science.

The reason it's weird is because I was talking to my boyfriend about this like literally last night. He was half asleep beside me and I was watching an episode of law and order that was all about kidney transplants and donatinons. I woke him up and told him that we were going to go get signed up and that it's going to be our christmas present to the world haha.

I am a terrible human being; I did it for the lower fee on the license itself.

With as much as I like to party, they'd be hard pressed to find anything worth using for someone else. My eyes might get a passing grade, but my liver and lungs are definitely off the table. They probably would not be able to use my skin for grafts as I am literally covered head to toe in moles that will one day of their own accord become cancerous. JOY!

Sorry this is incredibly off topic and I didn't click on the link but I wanted to say people who are skinny or underweight are just as sensitive to people making remarks about their weight as the obsese are.

It's a very good way to offend someone even if you weren't trying to be offensive.

For me, if life can be given to someone else out of a death, this is a great thing in my book!! I suppose that I am not attached to my body in this way that I want to be preserved for any reason!

You're soo right. I'm really skinny. It's not because I don't eat or make myself throw up. It's because I have an awesome metabolism and I've had it all my life. I'm really tall too so people always think I weigh like 100 lbs or something but I'm usually between 130-140 lbs. Anyways, the point of this is that it's true. Skinny comments can be as hurtful as fat comments. In school I got called everything from toothpick to wall. It hurt.

I know you definitely didn't mean to offend anyone, Girl with fire, but just be careful in the futur

P.S. Even at 130lbs, I'm healthy. Except for the smoking... but I'm working on that Skinny doesn't mean unhealthy. Just like overweight doesn't always mean unhealthy either.

Honey, no one is going to "stalk" you for your organs. They can't take them until you are brain dead. And, in most cases, it may need to be official, on your driver's license or a living will, just telling someone may not be enough for some transplant committees. Actually very FEW people actually qualify for being an organ donor. Basically, if you are young, and healthy and died from a traumatic brain injury that left the rest of your body intact, your family may be approached. (Young males who engage in "Extreme Sports" and bad driving tend to end up being organ donors more than anyone else.)If you die of cancer or other diseases, your organs can't be used (that's one of the reasons so many people die on organ transplant waiting lists, not only are there not enough donors, most people don't die in a manner that would leave the organs intact and healthy.)

Drinking, unless you have actual liver damage, does not disqualify you from donating organs. Either does smoking (for the lungs, it depends.) They examine the organs before they are donated.

I'm a tissue and organ donor. Not the entire body for science thing, but they can take any organ they want. I've seen people on waiting lists die, children, mothers, fathers, good people, who could have lived if they had been able to receive an organ in time.

I really am ok with all of it - eyes, skin, intestines, veins, everything. Again, some of it may seem odd at first but I'll be done with all of it. Even if they couldn't hide pretty much everything for a proper funeral (which I'm not particularly concerned with) it's still worth someone's life to me. I'll be dead, it's ok if I don't look my best

Limitations? No one touches any part of my eyes, period.

Just a note, I did not mean to offend anybody by my comment that the woman in the ad needs a meal. I am aware that some people who are naturally thin are very self conscious about their weight and appearance. I just find it disgusting that the media uses people who look like they could have just come off of a season of survivor to use as sex symbols. There is a REASON eating disorders are so common. I have nothing against naturally thin people, I find them as beautiful as anybody else, but people who are naturally thin rarely look like they are dying of starvation, they are just thin.

Second, people do fucked up things when they are desperate and my organs do not need to be involved in any of them. They can have them when I am done with them.

Third, and this might sound really fucked up but it really freaks me out that my blood/organs could end up in some prison psychos body. Or some other horrible excuse for a human being. That being said, I am aware I don't really have the option to choose; so maybe from now on I will wish on every shooting star I see, that when I am done with them they will go to somebody who truly deserves them.

I share the same line of thought as some of the rest of you, I won't be needing any of it anymore, so go ahead and take what you can use. If any part of my body can help somebody else, that's a chance at something that person might not have been able to have before. The only thing that worries me at all is that I have heard rumors that some EMT's will let you die if you're a donor because of the shortage of good organs to go around. I don't personally believe it, but I have friends that do.

It's more like I forget about changing it on my license.

I also have an irrational fear of people thinking I'm dead and I'm not and them harvesting my organs...Might have to do with this Alfred Hitchcock episode I saw as a kid...

I would like to be, but I haven't registered or anything because I don't know how to do it. I thought they were supposed to ask you when you got your driver's license. I know my sister got a card then, but they never asked me.

EDIT: I just looked it up and I have to fill in a form and mail it to the Misitry of Health and get a new health card that says donor on the back. I wish I'd thought/known about it when I had to go get a new health card a few months ago.
