Can you swim?

Contributor: DreamWolf DreamWolf 02/23/2012

Maybe you will laugh but don't do so if this is the first time you have ever heard about it: some people can't swim, seriously...

Of course such a thing depends heavily on your environment, how your family raised you, if you are taught to swim in school, and other factors - but anyway... Can you swim? :)

Swimming is meant in a general way here, meaning that you are able to do the swimming, but it doesn't have to mean that you are a good swimmer...

Yep !

No one really taught me, though. I was just in an after-school day-care program and they'd let us play in the pool and I watched other people.

I love to swim, though I don't get much opportunity to do so. I taught myself how when I was about six. Though I'm no champion or endurance swimmer, I'm at least capable of making my way from one end of a decent-sized pool to the other (but I do get tired quickly doing that).

Same. I learned my first year of college. I can swim underwater, I had so many ear problems as a kid that I can't do any kind of swimming where my head goes above water, it throws my balance off and my body automatically stands up no matter what. I plan on getting lessons for my kids so they don't have to deal with it later on.

Yep, I can swim. I grew up with a pool in my back yard, and learned at an early age. It does not at all surprise me that some people just never learn. In fact, I had a co-worker who was 33 recently that was married a few months ago and they were heading to Mexico for the honeymoon. I teased him and told him there is always water-sports he can participate in. He didn't find it too amusing, not that he was mad at me for that, just sort of embarassed that he did not know how to swim. They had fun regardless, so all is good in the hood.

I love water. There was a distinct time in my early twenties when it dawned on me that not everyone knows how to swim. The thought never really crossed my mind before, since it was such a common thing where I grew up. I was talking to a friend from Hungary, and she didn't really have access to recreational water, so never learned how. In fact, it was very surprising to her when she came to the US that so many people COULD swim, since very few people she knew in Hungary could. That blew my mind.

I can swim, but not very well. I have a lot of trouble staying above water while upright - I can float on my back but simply paddling in place takes a lot out of me to the point that I rarely go deep enough that my feet don't touch the ground.
