Careers in the Sex Industry?

Contributor: ThingsBetchesLove ThingsBetchesLove
Wasn't quite sure where to post this, I figured this would be the best spot.

I want to have a career in the sex industry, but I'm just not sure where to even start. What kind of careers are out there, aside from the obvious pornstars and such?

I guess I'm just looking for general advice. Any suggestions, possible career choices, etc. are super appreciated!

For a little about me, if it helps, my name is Taylor, I'm 20, engaged, a soon-to-be mother, and I don't have a degree in anything yet, but definitely would get one. I'm good at pretty much anything and everything, literally, and I'm not trying to brag. I've done my parent's accounting, I've designed my own blog layouts from scratch, I designed my friend's prom dress...I have a finger in every pie. I'm not particularly amazing at anything, but I do a good job of everything. Any all all careers could be an option for me. Thanks!

I think that it depends on what you want to do! What I think would be particularly awesome would be designing toys. Usually for this you'll need an Architecture or Design degree (for product design they actually tend to prefer Arc, but if you have a nice portfolio either will do) and it's a bit hard to get into, but it sounds super neat.

You could also be an entrepreneur and start a sex shop. This probably would require a degree in business. A lot of sex shops also give sex classes, which is pretty stellar.

You also could go into sex therapy, helping couples get around road blocks. This is usually a job for someone with a masters in Psych, but again it depends.

You could also get a degree in film (usually they only require a BA and then an internship, so that might get you out of Uni the fastest because it would be a 4 year BA instead of a 6 years masters degree) and shoot porn and stuff. You could even specialize in educational sex videos and such.

I think that to design lingerie you'd need to go to a pretty high end fashion uni, because fashion is a terribly hard industry to get into, and then when you run out of ideas they kick you to the curb. That might be the hardest one to get into.

This one's a stretch, but you could also go to medical school, because a lot of companies like to have 'Dr recommended' and such. I think that if you were a physician working at a sex company you'd be pretty cool, but $250,000 in debt might be a bit much for what you'd make not working as an actual doctor.

That's all that I can think of right now, but I'll get back to you!

If you have something you're super interested in, you might want to contact a few companies and see what they offer as far as jobs, and what they want you to do in order to get into those positions. They might also offer internships if you have a bachelors or associates, that way you can bypass going to graduate school in leu for doing the dirty work around the company and learning the ropes. I'm sure that a lot of companies would be thrilled to talk to you!

Thank you, I definitely didn't think of a few of those! It's so hard because every time I try to search, it's like jobs for pornstars and camgirls, which is a pain. I would love to open my own sex toy shop, there definitely is not a good one around my town, the best being a Spencers.
