I give to the local animal shelter and to Heifer yearly.
Heifer is an awesome organization because it promotes sustainable living. They'll give cows and chickens and gardening supplies to people in need so that those people can grow and breed their own livestock for food and fertilizer.

Habitat For Humanity - not sure if local or not, but they help build homes for people in financial stress....

we donate to AKF (American Kidney Fund). they call us up whenever they plan on coming by to pick up stuff to see if we have anything to donate so they know whether to stop at our house or not.
