I'm pretty sure I haven't seen this *anywhere* here, but if it's already available, link it! but anyway, what toys did you cool people play with when you were a kid? and if you got kids now, what do they play with?
i personally loved my Barbie dolls till I was like 13 years old, and I would still love to collect them; they really are works of art (at least the designer ones are). I also loved playing with legos, but they were a bitch to step on lol

I concur on the pain of stepping on legos!!! They are still all over my house, my boys still love them. I swear they jump in my path just to trip me when I'm in their rooms.
My boys LOVE comic books. I indulge them quite a bit with DC comics. I was a book nerd growing up and my favorite books were the " Sweet Valley High" series when I was a kid. Anyone remember those?

Oh gosh, that reminds me of a story. When my brother, sister, and I were kids, we loved Legos. We had gallon ice cream buckets full of them. We would dump them on the living room floor, lie down on our stomachs, and start building. When it came time to clean up, we seemed to always miss one or two in the pile of the carpet. My dad would walk though the living room barefoot and step on them. He would start cursing up storm and threatening to throw all of the Legos in the trash. Christmas would come around, and what would be under the tree for us? More Lego sets! And my dad would help us put them together!
I had Barbie dolls too. I still have some vintage and limited edition ones. I also had some of the Jem dolls as a kid, along with Jem's roadster and backstage dressing room.
I was sort of a geeky kid though, and I loved my microscope. Every Christmas, I used to ask for a rock tumbler and one of those models of the human body too. Never got them.

i think a microscope would have kicked ass, i want to invest in one sometime in the near future actually...

Matchbox cars, hot wheel cars and Nintendo (8-Bit). My kids have everything they can get their hands on, I'm that dad that bought everything for my kids because I didn't have much. (Plus that I am just a big kid myself!)
My Tamagotchi was sooo awesome, even if I did manage to kill it all the time lol. I remember them being banned in my grade school cuz they'd start beeping during class. Leaving them home meant almost certain death too. So I'd have a pet from like, 2pm to about 7am, then when I'd get home the pet would be no more!
My siblings and I would spend hours upon hours with the Legos. We had this super neat table that was lego topped for easy building and split into quarters. There was almost always one empty quarter but sometimes the 3 of us would manage to share it somehow.
My grandmother had this really neat play set that I loved to sit and play with. I have no idea what the name of it was but it was like connecting straws together and building shapes out of that, similar to K'Nex only with straws and joints.
I had one of these, it was used. It belonged to one of my neighbors and he gave it to me because I was a weird kid. My Man had a new one. Coolest toy Ever! The Strange Change Machine. link
Both of our moms threw them away. I was going to get him one from EBay about 10 year ago, and they were running about $100.00. Now they are down to less than $25.00 he may get one for his birthday.
My fav Barbie: She had a suntan.... all over
I got these from the same boy. They were Hot Wheels with little motors in them, and you'd "juice them up" with the gas pump which ran on like, 8 D batteries. They were fast, even second hand! They were so fast, I didn't have enough track for them and they would go all over the house and my dad would swear because he thought they were mice.
When I was really young my favorite toy was my Teddy Ruxpin because he taught me how to read. After that none of my toys really stand out because I was much more interested in reading.

The play set you describe sounds like it could be Tinker Toys.
