Coffee Drinkers

Do you own a Keurig machine and if so, how do you feel about the different Keurig machines that are on the market? I want to pick one up but Green Mountain Coffee has recently switched up their machines and made them more proprietary. This bothers me. It bothers me enough to want to hack the machine and I think I've found a way to do it.

How do you feel about these machines and the changes the company instituted with version 2.0 of their machines? Don't be shy, give me your two cents. I'll listen.

I like our Keurig a lot. I think it is bs that they are putting microchips in their k cups so they can only be used once and only in a keurig.

And that is what has driven me nuts. I agree with you bluepeg and also think it is bs by the metric ton. The good news is that there is a hack/workaround for it though.

We don't like the idea of tossing, even recycling all those containers. I also heard they don't taste as good as fresh ground beans. Good for certain situations, I'm sure. Plus, we're spoiled by our espresso machine and Cusinart.

Can those containers even be recycled?

As far as the taste goes, I've only read that it can dramatically swing from model to model. I want to pick one up for my mom, as she brews 6 cups of coffee but only drinks 2. It drives me crazy when she does this.

We have the original version (not the 2.0) and find K cups everywhere. We have a few varieties we enjoy and find them on sale all the time. We enjoy the speed and convenience of our machine. My hubby has the one cup version in his office too.

I don't like the proprietary chip thing they are doing, but business is business, a lot of companies do the same thing (think printer ink).

If you don't like the waste produced by the Keurig machines, just use any of the reusable K Cup pods that you can fill with any ground coffee, and voila, no waste!

Sadly, the reusable/refillable pods only work with the first generation Keurig. Once Green Mountain Coffee realized people were doing this, they came up with version 2.0 that doesn't allow for the refillable/reusable cups to be used with out a hack/workaround.

This is one of the things that bothers me about it.

My aunt has one and I love it, but I also tend to use one of those reusable cup things or just use it to make individual servings of hot water and use instant so I can't really weigh in on the whole microchip thing.

I do like it enough, however, that I'll probably get my mother and I one (for the same uses listed above) when we move into a place of our own again.

Will you hunt around for a first gen one or just deal with the second (evil and proprietary ) gen one?
