Colored Hair Dye Brand Recommendations?

Contributor: Tori Rebel Tori Rebel
I haven't used bright colored dye in years - probably since high school or shortly after. And there are a ton of options now as far as brands, when all I used to be able to get my hands on was Manic Panic. For those of you that have or have had colored hair - and I'm talking pink, blue, purple, etc. - what do you use? What do you like?

I have heard that Special Effects is better than manic panic. I've only ever used Manic Panic though, so I really don't know.

I used to use N'Rage from Sally's Beauty Supply when I streaked my hair purple. It worked for me, never had any problems with it (a lot of people say it fades within two days - I used Pantene Color Protecting shampoo and kept it for a month), and it doesn't require an extra bleaching step because the bleach is part of the coloring.

I saw that they have that there. I don't need it to stay forever, I'll most likely get bored and clip it off anyway. But the bleach in that scares me a little - my hair is very light blond naturally so I'm not bleaching it before I color it at all.

It doesn't damage it, if that's what concerns you (I found it to be a low-level bleach anyway). Since you're coloring just the tips it won't affect the health of your hair, as long as you've always kept your hair in good condition. It just makes the color more 'true' is all.

There are spray-in colors or mousses that are temporary, or go to Walgreen's and pick up the bright color kits they have there and don't use the bleach. Or try KoolAid powder and conditioner. When I was platinum blonde, I did the KoolAid trick so I could have red hair for a few days. A strong salicylic acid shampoo or clarifying shampoo will get it out after a while. Ask Jul!a or Sexista for tips! They sport neon-colored locks frequently

Manic Panic is okay, but I prefer Jerome Russell Punky Hair Colour. I used it on my natural dark brown hair and got a nice magenta tint from it. I also used it when I dyed the ends of my hair purple (used bleach that time, though).

That is what worries me...I've kept my hair so 'virgin' for so long now that it scares me to treat it like this It's not going to stop me, just scare me a little.

I don't need to go that temporary - permanent is even ok by me so that if I decide to keep it longer, it won't fade as much. I remember doing the kool aid thing when I was younger though! To get pink hair

I'm hoping one of the girls you mentioned or Carrie Ann or Victoria will stop by since they seem to be pretty frequently dyed pink!

I use Special Effects or Splat, which is only available at Walgreens, as far as I know. They last about the same amount of time, which depends on how porous your hair is and if you bleach and your shampoo and all that jazz.

Though I will admit to get the color in this picture, I mixed Splat with a light Manic Panic color, cuz neither SE or Splat make a true pale pink and I wanted something light but bright and not too purple toned (which the SE light pink - cupcake pink - turns on me)It, of course, did not last very long because manic panic pales just... don't.

Yay- there's a Walgreens on my way home from work, so that would be very easy to get my hands on. And I have pale, pale blond hair and want to go w/ a darker blue so hopefully it will come out dark enough...time will tell I suppose!

Yeah, I'd be afraid to do anything pale... I'd be afraid it would look washed out in a couple of days.

If your hair is naturally light blonde, you do not need to bleach your hair out before putting on a demi-permanent color. The purpose of the bleach is the lighten the hair so the colors show up, since demi-permanent colors do not lift color like a regular permanent color and uses a developer.

Most of the crazy colors are about the same. The color molecules are too large to be absorbed into the hair strand, so they stay on the surface and slowly wash away as you shampoo. If you are not bleaching your hair the color may fade a little more evenly and not look as blotchy as it would if you were bleaching.

Good luck!

I've only seen Splat at Walgreens, but I use both, depending on the color I want. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the blue from Splat, as mine faded out within just a few weeks, but the purple lasts a good month or two before having to be redone, and if you're not bleaching your hair, then there's nothing wrong with that. The red one is pretty decent too. I also use Atomic Pink from Special Effects, and I'll report back how their turquoise holds up as I'll be going turquoise next week, lol

Either way, best of luck!

Blue always seems to be the fastest fading color, no matter what brand. I wonder why? I did my son's hair the fishbowl blue that S FX has, too, once and it lasted all of like 10 days before looking gray. SUCH a bummer.

I noticed this when I was in high school too, but it seemed extra bad when I tried it last year. Of course I had everything purple, then dyed it red, then bleached it a month later to do the blue and before I added the blue it looked like this awesome cotton candy. Then the blue looked really awesome for about 3 or 4 washings, then turned 18 shades of wrong as I like to call it. A few shades of blue, a few green, some purple, and even some pink, lol.

I'm hoping a blue that isn't supposed to be all that vibrant won't cause as many issues, but even if it does, I've always wanted to try turquoise out as a hair color, and I'll take pictures to remember it by, lol.

So I did it. I went with Manic Panic because Sally only had 2 brands and I'd never heard of the other one. It was supposed to be a deep blue but I wussed out a little and rinsed it out earlier than planned so it ended up being kind of a Microsoft Windows blue, which I'm ok with. It's slowly fading to turquoise but I wash my hair a LOT, so I can't say I blame it and the turquoise is a good color for me anyway.

Overall, I'm happy with how it came out. Only lesson is that next time I'll leave it in longer and dye more portions of it.

Thanks for all your help!!!

I wish you could post pics. BUT! Very glad it turned out well. The Sally's by me carries N'rage and some other brand, plus manic panic and both of their brands are pretty bad. I've tried them both and just could not get vibrant, even results - so good pick with the manic panic, considering the options.
