Coupons

Contributor: Pandahb Pandahb
I know that coupons have gotten really popular since that new show. But how extreme of a couponer are you? I work at a retail store and just about everyone who walks through the door already has a coupon in their hand before they even starting looking.

But then there are the other people who know that they should have a coupon too and try to get the cashier (me) to give them one. Now I have been at a place that ALWAYS said no. But where I am at now only will if you have a charge card for the store. (aka a stipulation)

But my question is: Do you go into stores that you have coupons for knowing you'll get the best price? Or do you go in and look if they have good deals and then try to get the price as low as you can? What is your strategy for saving money?

I tend to buy things on sale but don't really coupon. My food intolerance means that I buy mostly fresh ingredients, and those don't tend to have coupons.

My aunt, grandmother, and mother are actually really into couponing. We live in Texas and H-E-B has tons of fresh food coupons so they're doing good at that for now. I know my mum is probably going to end up on Extreme Couponers eventually though. Just today she called me and said she got over $200 worth of food for $1.50. I was absolutely amazed and I'm going to try and get in on it too. She does a lot of work though. She calculates ahead of time, and sorts her coupons. So it's something you have to really have time for.

I haven't seen extreme couponing but I visit a forum about coupons and deals for Canadians and a lot of people talk about the show. I guess there are people getting like $600 worth of stuff for free with their coupons?! Intense. In their discussion, they were talking about how that really isn't possible for Canadians since the coupons we get are not as valuable and I guess there are stipulations/etc.

I am not an extreme couponer, I will use them every so often though.. but not to the lengths of some people. My mom however is a coupon junkie lol

It takes so much time to really get to that level of couponing. If I see a coupon that I will use I do set it aside, but that is very rarely my reason for buying something or my reason for going to a store.

I save coupons on items that I'll use from Sunday ads, clip double-coupons from supermarket ads, combine them and buy the item if it's on sale. It's extreme couponing, but I feel good achieving the extra savings, and only a housewife gets that kind of luxury to do so!

My better half uses them from time to time, I usually cannot remember what drawer I put them in when I get home.

I think stores are starting to crack down and set limits on coupon use, because of extreme couponing. Also, people across the country are reporting their Sunday papers are being stolen by extreme couponers. I was reading an article that mentioned women actually stealing all of the papers out of those newspaper boxes to get more coupons. Some of them were caught didn't think they had done anything illegal. WTF? Stealing is stealing, folks!

I don't bother with coupons at the grocery store half the time. Most of the time, the coupons are for crap I don't buy (such as boxed convenience foods). When I get coupon from department stores and specialty stores I frequent, I tend to use those.

I also heard about this. I was listening to a local radio morning show and they were saying that people were stealing the newspapers from the day before that some stores keep in the back. And apparently people thought that the papers were just going to get thrown away and didn't feel bad for stealing them. But in actuality, the stores get money back for all the papers they don't sell that day and so the stores are actually losing money because of these people.

I personally don't use coupons all that much, but since I'm still a college student, I don't really go grocery shopping and the few things I do pick up are MUST HAVEs and I don't have time to wait around for a coupon or deal to come.

Has anyone here stolen coupons from newspapers????? Has anyone taken an extra paper at those 50cent metal boxes for the coupons?????

I've done the coupon thing! I was totally addicted to it, but I consider it a totally healthy addiction, actually. I was always paying pennies for bags full of stuff no matter where I went. It takes some strategy and time, but I consider it a fun challenge. I've gotten so many totally free things (like my $100 toothbrush).

I use coupons sporadically, but generally I buy whatever is marked down by the store.

If I'm honest, the reason I don't coupon is that I just don't want to spend the effort. I don't buy a paper because the clipper seldom has the brands I like (I often buy store brand anyways), and I don't have a printer at home, some printing online coupons is a bit of a hassle. Plus, money isn't a big concern for me, so I don't budget (thought I really I truly ought to start for long-term good).

my wife does the coupons. I do not. But I will use them if she gives them to me and the item is on sale already. I will not buy something just because she has a coupon.

When I go grocery shopping I tend to pay for about 1/3 of what I buy. I email any company, if I have the slightest complaint about a product. I also shop at stores where you can use more than 1 coupon per product. I get my coupons from the Sunday paper and the internet.
