I am not sure I could do it now, without feeling guilty for the poor trapped animal, but in my youth, I used to catch them, watch them for a while, then release them.

Anyone else ever catch fireflies or butterflies in jars?

Of course, I even made rings out of them somehow. I know, looking back at it, it was kind of cruel, but fun at the time.

Only insect I've ever kept in a jar were ladybugs. To be honest with you, I've never seen a firefly in my life.

I used to love visiting my Grandparents in the summer, and being able to catch fireflies. We'd always catch a bunch in a jar, and then let them go once it got really dark. It was fun trying to catch them

I did it last year. But only because the poor butterfly had a broken wing. So I decided to keep it til it got better. I would feed it and everything but it still died
