I didn't, but my youngest son just signed up for the first year of band that's offered at his school and he choose his instrument. I'm curious if any of my fellow EF members played a band instrument?
Did you play a band instrument in school?

Yes, and I still do now that I'm in college. I play flute and piccolo. Band has really done a lot for me and given me great opportunities. It has also given me my best friends. I hope that your son sticks with it and learns to love it. What instrument did he choose?

In 5th grade, I played the violin.

Violin, moved to clarinet, then moved to oboe. Can't march oboe, so they wanted to put me in the pit. Tried percussion, I sucked.

Played trumpet in middle school through college. So glad I did it in college, that's when it got really fun!

Awesome! As you may be able to tell, I'm a HUGE proponent of music programs, but especially band. Later on, the opportunity for your son to be part of a marching band might come along. Concert band teaches many useful skills like dedication and attention to detail. Marching band teaches those times a thousand, along with memorization, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, and effective communication. I am so grateful that my parents encouraged me to be in band and supported me through everything I did. I can't even describe in words how much my time in band programs has meant to me.

I tried to learn to play the oboe when they started instrument lessons in school in 4th grade. Unfortunately I had a lot of problems playing it (mild asthma, severe tonsillitis) and gave it up within the school year. Part of me wishes I'd tried to pick it back up after having my tonsils out, or at least switched to a non-wind instrument.
