Do You Budget?

Contributor: invisiblehat invisiblehat
I was drawing my budget for next semester when I stopped and realized that as far as I knew, it was only I and one other friend who actually followed budgets for expenses during the school year. Mine's a simple one for predictable expenses, like books, healthcare (by far my largest expense, sigh), food, laundry, school loan interest, and so on, as well as a catch-all category for unpredictable events like gifts, social activities, and minor emergencies.)

Do you follow a budget, and if so, what is it like? (No need for specific numbers, but categories/a general explanation would be nice).

I would love more of a budget, I just haven't found the right way to set it up!

Using a budget spreadsheet is the only way that I can stay current with my bills.

Up until very recently, I didn't set a budget for myself. My current circumstances make it so that I don't really *need* to budget, but it's a good idea to. So, I started setting up a budget for myself to help me build some savings.

No, not really. But I do try to stay aware of how much I spend each month and not spend too much.

I am on a budget. I save most of my financial aid now (about 3/4ths of it if possible) then set aside funds for my cell phone bill and food.

not a strict budget...but i do make sure that my monthly bills are covered before spending on other things. i also have to have a certain ammount in the bank to feel secure enough to spend extra money on nonessentials.

me and my fiance are both full.time college students living off loans right now so budgeting is a must. we usually budget a 3 month budget and a monthly breakdown. because our loans are disbursed around ever 3 months.

We are always on some sort of a budget. We don't buy anything we really don't need.

There's a great budgeting software I've been using for a couple of years called YNAB. You Need A Budget.

I've tried most of the programs out there and found YNAB to be the best system.

I try to budget, and I try to stick to them when I make them up. Since I don't actually have an income right now, it's a bit harder to do.
I'm just trying to limit my spending to necessities (like food and gas), and incidentals when they're cheap.

We try to budget. I have a monthly spreadsheet with each of our bills, our rent, gas, & diapers. We stick with it until we see how much is left over & then my husband tends to go crazy with it, there is no saving any of it lol

I follow a budget on eating out and grocery shopping roughly-- I watch out and pinch pennies, but I haven't drawn anything up.

It depends on if I have anything planned for purchase or not, but if I have something I am planning on buying then I usually make a budget of some form or another.
And right now, I've got a whole wordpad document budgeting out my Halloween costume to give myself a rough idea of how much I'll need.
We do budget heavily when we go grocery shopping too, to the point where even if I find a store brand item nearly inedible (wal-mart's "Great Value" brand chili comes to mind, it's far too salty for my liking), we'll get it anyone so long as it's cheaper than the name brands.
