Do you chew your food thoroughly before swallowing it?

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
A man in Tacoma, Washington had a health scare last weekend, he swallowed a steel bristle from his grill brush link, and it made me wonder whether he's chewed his food properly before swallowing it.
Do you chew your food thoroughly or just chew a few times and swallow it down? Are you good at detecting bones/foreign objects in your food while chewing?

I like to grind our own meat. A few bone fragments get passed by every now and then.
Kinda get good at detecting it in the food when you chew.

If I'm rushed, that's probably the only time I don't chew my food thoroughly.

Ummm.. I'd say I do chew thoroughly. Even when I'm wolfing down, I chew things pretty well. I would PROBABLY be able to detect a forgein object. Not 100% sure though.

I think I do pretty good. I chew enough for it to be easy to swallow but not so much that the food becomes gross.

I find that I eat less and enjoy my food more if I chew slowly and thoroughly. I also sip soups and beverages with my meals to help avoid putting more in that I burn off. So far it's working.

I would most certainly notice anything foreign in my food as I also look at each bite for the visual appeal...I am SUCH a gourmand!

I usually notice strange objects in my food like bone or gristle. It grosses me out. I tend to chew thoroughly.

I should spend more time chewing. I would eat less. But I am in a hurry all the time!

Hubby calls me the worlds fastest eater. He thinks I should try for a contest. It's all because I don't chew my food as good as I should. I can detect things in my food though. I need to slow down, but I'm usually in a rush.

I don't really pay attention to how much I chew, just enough to get it down.

Sometimes I chew my food quite thoroughly, other times just enough to swallow it (mostly depends on how hungry I am). Though I am quite good at detecting bones/etc in food immediately.

I try to and I chew slowly. My teeth are really sensitive so I try to be careful if there are any bones.

I used to inhale my food (a by product of being a nurse) but since hubby had surgery, we take 30 minutes to eat each meal so I am doing much better!

Me too! I love food, and I always chew slowly to enjoy all the flavors. It drives my husband and son crazy when we're eating out, they'll both be done eating and have to wait for me to finish savoring my portion.

It really depends if I'm in a rush or not, and have time to eat. If I'm not, I chew slowly because of my teeth (I have two cavities and two wisdoms that need to be pulled) but if I am, I tend to scarf, which shocks my husband that I'm not throwing up later because I eat so fast.

Chew, what is the this chewing thing you speak of? I simply inhale my food.

In all seriousness I am generally good at chewing my food to the point of detecting things I don't want in it. But I still do inhale my food, I can't sit there and take 30 minutes to eat a sandwich, it's gone in 4 bites. It annoys my fiancee, she always says to me "can you even taste your food?"
