Do you drive out of your way for cheap gas?

Contributor: Ms. Paprika Ms. Paprika
I've been wondering about this for awhile...I will purchase gas if it's under a certain price point and consider that a good deal. If my tank is nearly empty I'll bite the bullet and pay whatever the cheapest cost is that I see on my way home or running errands.
My family, however, is the opposite. They will actually drive pretty far out of their way (next city over) to get cheaper gas, even if they're arguably spending more than they save.

It's pretty easy to follow which gas stations have the best prices around here, and which ones change their prices before or after all the other stations do. If I notice gas prices start to go up, I'll go to one of the gas stations I know probably hasn't changed yet to fill up. I won't go more than a mile or two out of my way, though.

No point in driving out of my way but I live and work on different sides of town so if its cheap at work I'll stop there

I go to one dealer that gives a decent discount for using that stations credit card... Almost as cheap as going to Costco or SAMs club for gax...

It all depends how far away that cheap gas is, if it's not too bad then yes.

It depends on how much cheaper the gas is over there, if it's only one or two cents less than my local station, I'll get it locally.

We don't really go OUT of our way, but we'll redirect our travel a little if we know of a good place that's on the way.

not really. In my area it's rarely more than a 5 cent difference, and since I only have a 12 gallon tank it's not worth driving even a few miles in my opinion. I might change my opinion on that if I had a larger tank though.

We don't really go out of our way but my fiance works in another state and we only get gas across state lines because gas is much cheaper over there. We plan out our gas purchasing around his work schedule.

Ok, I don't drive, personally (thankfully, our transit system is pretty good) but I know my brother has an app on his phone that shows him where gas is cheapest in the area, and lets him know whenever there's an awesome deal or pumps mislabeled, though I don't think he'd go outside the city for it, so maybe up to 20 minutes away if it's a good deal.

there is a FM that is on my way to anywhere, and they are the cheapest gas around. So I stop there for my gas.

We just buy it at the cheapest decent gas station close to us. When we're traveling, we always fill up before leaving NJ, because it's more everywhere else, usually A LOT more. And we have full-service here. Go figure.

I have my go to places, but if I happen to be running some errand and stumble upon gas way cheaper than what I'm usually paying, I fill up.

No, I don't go out of my way for cheap gas. My parents will drive to the other side of town to save a couple cents a gallon and I think it's so silly because it's taking so much more of their time and effort. And really, the extra driving negates some of the savings they're getting with the gas. It's just not worth it to me.

I won't make a special trip, no. But when I used to live in Bellingham, WA and the Costco gas was a good .30 cents cheaper than everywhere else, I would plan my trips to Costco around fill ups.

No. I hate going out of my way for anything. I'm not a fan of driving right now. My care needs some TLC that I can't afford at the moment.

If it's extremely worth it, I would. Normally I use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest place nearby

It depends where I am. I normally will go out of my way but not too far.

If we're staying in the area, there's one place that is almost always cheaper than everywhere else, so we tend to just head there every time. Most of the gas stations in the "city" are in the same general area, so it's not specifically an inconvenience. We never fill up at the gas station closest to us, though, because we never let the gas tank get low enough to need to (we'll be in town sooner or later). If we're going to be heading to a neighbouring city (which happens fairly often), we'll make it a point to fill up there instead of stopping in for gas when we get down to half a tank (which is the usual practice). I'm in a fairly rural area, so gas is quite expensive where I am, but there are a lot of cheaper places to stop when we're heading to another city (because the drive is at least an hour and a half before we get anywhere).

I'll drive about 5 miles out of my way to get cheap gas. But like most others, I can plan my trip so that it's not out of the way at all.

I drive past a few stations to MY station where I have a credit card at, but not for cheap gas.
