Do you give everything a gender?

Contributor: Adnerbmw Adnerbmw
ok so in the car tonight i asked my husband if its normal to give everything a gender, like numbers. For me every number is either a girl of a boy, like 1 is a boy 2 is a girl 4 is a boy 9 is a girl. He said its odd that i do that, i also do it with many other things, like foods, green bell peppers are boys all the other color bell peppers are girls, corn is male. anyhows you get the idea, so my question is does anyone else do this or am i just a strange person?

You should move to France - every French noun has a gender.

That post made very little sense to me and I reread it a few times so it might just be you.

It's common in languages other than English to have genders for nouns, but I don't think of things like that. I don't think it's very odd; it's just a different way of thinking of things. I know I think of many things differently than most people.

I don't do it with everything, but I will with some odd objects (car for instance). I do wonder how letters have gender. LOL

I don't really do this. There may be one or two things that I assign a gender to, but it's not common for me.

No, I don't tend to assign genders to things. Ironically, though, I do tend to refer to my vibrators as "she" in my reviews... I've noticed this a long time ago, so I've been trying not to do it now.

Certain things it seems. Like my husband says the car is a girl...things like that. But numbers, letters, etc. no.

Most of my childhood was spent in a house with my grandfather, whose German-speaking roots wore off on me since most of the time he would assign genders to nouns. I do it with a few numbers and colors as well as objects, so you're not alone.

Yes. "It" just doesn't sound right. I guess I'm a personal kind of person, so when it comes to things that their gender is unknown, I feel I must say "he" or "she." Like my cats, hamster, flies, other bugs, etc. I wouldn't go so far as to call something that truly has no gender a he or she, unless it just really fit, though.

Not really with things like numbers or words...or letters.

But I do that all the time with my possessions or random objects...my current purse is a girl (easy choice, given that it's a panda bear head with a pink bow ^_^ ).

I also tend to give random animals/bugs/plants genders (usually based on behavior, since it's not often I can get close enough to actually tell an animals gender x'D ) and sometimes whole personalities.

...now that I think about it, I think I've even given a few of my toys genders as well. 0_o

My cars, my snowboard, bicycle, big things like that get genders but not smaller things like vegetables. I have not given numbers or letters genders either.

Many European languages have genders for things: French and German, as stated above, but also Spanish IIRC, dutch and so on.

When I was younger numbers had genders, too. All even numbers were male for me and every uneven number was female.

Now I'm imprinted by the language that the gender will be because of the word ending. Words ending with -in or -a are mostly female to me and words ending with -or are male, like a vibrator is male.
