I have never met anyone else who knows what I'm talking about and I always have to explain it. When I am finished, I get a weird look and then I insist on making the dish sometime in the future. Either you love it or you hate it.

I've never heard of it before, but it sounds pretty self explanatory really. It also sounds like something I think I'd like to try.
And trying to explain tortilla soup, just as futile, lol.

I have never heard of it.

No idea what it is.

It is pretty simple, it's just the concept they have a hard time swallowing. It transforms country fried steak into something even more mouth watering, if that's even possible.

I looove tortilla soup! I also love a good chicken corn chowder and white chili. Comfort food at it's finest!

It's traditional brown gravy made with a can of petite diced tomatoes. The tomato juices are the liquid portion of the recipe, adding water only as needed.

I have lived in the DEEP South my whole life. Whenever my Mother or any of her friends made cube steak for dinner, it was either covered an extremely rich brown gravy full of onion or it was covered in the MOST AMAZING TOMATO GRAVY EVER MADE. My mom didn't put onion in that one, but green bell pepper. I have tried and tired, but I have yet to be able to recreate it. My husband doesn't like it at all, so I don't have a lot of time to actually try it out anymore though.

I have never heard of it, but I would try it once. Twice if I liked it the first time.

The phrase 'tomato gravy' just makes me think of spaghetti sauce.

I must be a pretty crappy chef never to have heard of tomato gravy. But would anyone like to try my tomato jelly?! XDDD
02/23/2011
I have not a clue.. is it pasta sauce?

So when I see the red stuff slathered over meat loaf at a restaurant it's not actually ketchup?
Living in Oklahoma, I've never ever heard of this. But I wouldn't call Oklahoma deep south either, so maybe I live too far north. I have to say I would never consider putting anything other than regular gravy on my Chicken Fried Steak.

WHITEMIKE
I would have to have the rotel tomatoes with green chiles, for the spicy zing.

I have never heard of it but from descriptions, I would hate it - more because I dislike gravy than anything else.

I actually have heard of that before at a canning class I took. Haven't tried it though...

Chicken fried steak and country fried steak are not the same thing. Chicken fried steak is served with a white (milk/cream) gravy and country fried steak is served with a brown gravy.

Tomato gravy is something we make all the time down here in Louisiana. It's not something unusual here for sure, lol.

It's just a gravy that you make with tomato sauce. I make it with meatloaf. Sometimes I make a sausage and pork steak tomato gravy... things like that.

Sauce? We always use canned chunked tomatoes, no sauce. My grandmother taught us how to make it a long long time ago.

I don't use tomatoes for mine, I just use sauce. It's quicker and easier, lol. I've been making this for years too.

Hmm, interesting. I don't really like tomato 'sauce' for some reason. I'll ask my mom if she ever had it that way.

We also really like swiss steak.

I'd never heard of it but I'm not really a gravy person. I'd probably just eat the tomatoes.
04/01/2011
doesn't sound good, as i don't care for gravy
04/01/2011
I don't like tomatoes or gravy. Haha, so I don't think I'll like it.
