I've ridden horses since I was 11 years old and I adore it. I know what you mean about fear, though. I think every rider struggles with fear to some extent, whether they admit it or not. I have had to struggle through some major fear issues where I would feel like I couldn't breathe-basically a panic attack. This was mostly due to some bad falls that I've had. The key for me is just continuing to push myself, little by little. I wouldn't even ride for four years and then the next time I finally got on my goal was just to walk. I ended up trotting a good part of the session, which I was very proud of myself for.

There are some things you can do to help you with your fear. You can visualize your rides before you get on, including the possibility of negative things happening (i.e. a spook) and how you would get through it. While you're riding, try to practice deep breathing or my personal favorite, singing, when you get nervous. If you hold your breath, the horse can sense that and it just makes HIM nervous, which can trigger a flight reaction. You can't possibly hold your breath if you're singing. Are you familiar with Jane Savoie's work? She's an International dressage rider who has written quite a few books, both on practical training and also sports psychology. She is the best source I've come across to help with fear issues. Don't give up! You can definitely overcome your fear if riding is something you want to do.

The experiences I've had have been good, though I am a bit nervous around horses because of their size

I like to ride horses although I haven't in years. Used to a lot as a teenager. My Aunt had horses and we would often go for rides in the country.

I have only been on when I was a child and I liked it. I didn't have too much fear. But I guess years later I would have to see how I feel about it.

I've only rode a horse when I was a kid, and I'm not scared of them. I don't have the time and money to take care of a horse properly, or else it'll be nice to own one.

Our horse is located in a hay pasture with some other horses. We only have to pay for her basic care and medical needs. Thank goodness she hasn't had to be seen for anything major yet.

We still don't own a saddle but, when they go on rides, his friend has a saddle that fits her. My husband rides her a majority of the time. I just follow on a 4 wheeler.

I have no issues walking, feeding, cleaning, and loving on her. It's just when it comes time to ride.

I don't love it, but I do like it. My dad got me a horse when I was growing up. His name was Buck We did not name him that, he was Buck before we got him. Lol. He used to take us riding with his uncles every weekend. I would get really scared being alone when the horse would do something unusual, but I liked it for the most part. We had a lot of fun and since we live on a mountain, there's tons of nice area to ride up here!

I'm sorry you're so scared of them I bet that makes things really tough! I don't know how I'd feel on a horse now, but I would be nervous at first since it's been about 6 years since I've rode. I wonder if you could get some type of help or do some type of medidating to help overcome it? I mean, if you are really wanting to ride your horse and are being hindered by the fear. I can totally understand your fear though. I have very irrational fears of a couple of things, the first being spiders. LOL. But I don't have to ride them. Lol. I had someone recommend some type of therapy or something for my spider fear. It was someone here on EF, but I forgot the name of the therapy. It started with a C I think.

its really fun to ride them, but the secret is that you need to be calm and in control. horses can smell fear and weakness in a person and will either get scared or boss you around.

so just relax and get to know the animal more. feed it carrots and stuff.

I've been on a horse maybe twice in my life and though I enjoyed it both times they were very old and only walked a predesignated path. I feel if I rode a horse for real I would fall off and break my neck.
