do you, or have you wanted to put a small safe in your car?

Contributor: married with children married with children
I am looking to add a safe inside my car. For those times you cant carry something with you, and have to leave it inside your car waiting for you. I was wondering if anyone on here has a safe, or has looked into adding a safe to their car. Or even if you have a friend who has one.

I have a very small safe in my car. I keep my purse, checks, cash, etc. in there when I am going somewhere for a long period of time. It's actually built-in (hubby had it done for me) and not noticeable at all. It's hard to explain but it's under the passenger glovebox area. It just looks like some sort of foot rest, as it is covered in carpet material.

It seems like it would have to be hidden really well; if you can put it in the car that means someone can take it out of the car. Unless it's secured to the floor of the trunk, but that seems rather inconvenient and almost like an invitation for someone to steal the entire car out of sheer curiosity.

We have two in our home, but not the car. Many small safes are fairly easy to open, if you have some time alone with them. (Ever seen Storage Wars? They just use a hammer and an axe or wood splitter and break the thing open.)

In our house, the home safes are so no one goes into things that are none of their business, meds, important papers that haven't been brought to the safety deposit box at the bank etc. If we had firearms, they'd be in there, too.

Never thought about it. I use the trunk but other then my purse, or backpack and jewelry which I have with me, nothing else is that valuable.

Never thought about it for the car. Usually, if I don't want to take my purse or other valuables in with me where I'm going, I'll put them in the trunk or under the seat. As for the house, I really don't have anything THAT sensitive to lock away... at least I never thought about anything I have that way.

Hey, where's the 'other' option?

I had a Camaro that had a small safe in it when I bought it and loved the idea. Then I purchased an Aurora that had a hidden area between the back seat and the trunk. I installed a lock and had another safe. I forgot about it occasionally and then was very surprised when I opened it and found money I had saved for something. I used it for small gifts and as a bank. I have a different truck now - might have to find a safe area in it, but we'll see.

What? A safe in your car? So someone can steal your car and get a car and a safe w/ valuables? I have a Camry and they are theif magnets. That would be a dream for a car theif. I want to get one for my room, in my closet, one that cannot easily be stolen. In my car tho, no way! If I have valuables, I bring them with me or leave them home. I dont need to lose a car and my valuables.

Now someone can drive off with the car and take the safe with it.

The idea of a safe in your car is for holding things you cant carry with you (your sidearm in a store that does not allow guns, your cash you are going to use latter in the day but do not want to keep on your person until you are going to use it, or something valuable you just purchased). The intent is not to be used like a home safe. A good home safe keeps people out because it is 800 pounds or so, and the hinges are not exposed for easy access. Someone can break into anything with the right amount of time.

I want a safe to keep my firearm in, when I need to go into a business that does not allow firearms. Or when I go across the river to another state for something that was not planned, and my CCW does not work outside of my state. I can lock it up and not have to worry about it being on my body if I get stopped for something stupid like speeding.

I was all about to install one in my car but the cars motor gave up the ghost. Just a cheap walmart key opearated deal. But for like 55 bucks you can get the next level up that uses a key and a keypad. I have a few of those in my house. When I get my new truck I am going to install one, maybe weld it in. I think its a great idea to have one.

I gave my brother one when he went off to college, just because he was going to be parking on campus. I accidentally voted yes because I *had* one, but I recently got a new car - haven't thought about it until now.

I have a small safe in the house, but it's easy enough to carry out. I don't really keep valuable in there though, more things like birth certificates, social security cards, bonds, passports, things I wouldn't want to lose in a fire I keep in the small fireproof safe.

As for my car? I have a trunk lol. But really, I always lock my car and anything I'm nervous about people seeing and possibly breaking in to get I put in the glovebox, under the seat, or in the purse that somehow managed to live in the car between the front seats.

This is such a good idea. But it would have to be bolted down and absolutely unable to be removed from your car. Otherwise, they could just take it and work on cracking it open later!

My car recently got broken into. Fortunately, there was nothing in there to take, but it really opened my eyes to how vulnerable my stuff would be if there HAD been anything in there. They pried the light fixture cover off the ceiling, pulled everything out of the very back of my glove box and the bottom of the center console, dug under each of the seats...My car doesn't have a trunk release button inside, so they climbed in the back and pulled the rear seat forwards to they could pull everything out of the trunk...

Joke's on you, butthead. :> I wasn't born yesterday. I may have Illinois plates in Philadelphia, but I'm no tourist. I live here and I was born in Chicago! I don't keep valuable stuff in my car! LOL They went to all that trouble and got NOTHING! Except hopefully a guilty conscience for breaking my window

Never thought about getting a safe in the car. Seems like the trunk would do an excellent job instead. For the house, I have been looking at getting one soon.
