Do you remember...

Contributor: El-Jaro El-Jaro
I just called my sister on the land line and remember the old 10-10 numbers.

Does anyone else remember 10-10-321 for calling people? This is about 15 years ago or so.

Nope, never heard of that. I do remember when I could tell a person where they lived based on their number though.

I remember 10-10-321 although I never used it. They had some annoying commercials. Anyone else remember when area codes were only used when you called another state?

I remember 10-10-321 and similar services. I never used them myself, but my mom did when she called her sister out of state.

Kindred, I remember only using the area code when you dialed out of state, but then I can remember when most states only had one or maybe two area codes at the most. Do you remember the old postal codes that preceeded the zip codes on mail? This was the two digit code between the city and state on the envelope.

Gosh, has it really been that long ago? Holy crap! I am really feeling old now! Thanks a lot.

I used to use 10-10-321 everyday. We used it at work for awhile too.

Man, I forgot about that! I remember using this when I called my grandma long distance before she passed away. That was such a pain, and I really do not know if it saved you much. I also remember when the phone company was Mountain Bell and then AT&T. Damn, I am getting old!

Yeah - I remember that because if the person picked up - you were charged $1 for the basic 20 minutes even if it was an answering machine that picked up. (My mom would call us and not hang up in time to not get charged).

I remember something about commercials involving 10-10, but I don't remember beyond that. Then again, 15 years ago I was 8-years-old.

Yes, wasn't that for a cheaper rate on long distance calls?

I remember 10-10-321! And there was another one that I can't remember right now! And 1-800-COLLECT! I've had to dial the area code inside my own area code for about 10 years now. My area did an area code split so rather than dialing just the 7 digits, you now had to dial all 10 and it messes with me when I go just about anywhere else because everywhere else you just dial the 7 digits. But I remember when the split went into effect. I also remember rotary phones. My husband's parents had one in their kitchen until the phone company made them replace it because it wasn't going to work with the new phone lines. It still had the original area code for the area on it. The loop in Chicago is the only place now that gets a 312 area code, but the phone at my in-law's house waaaaaaay out in the suburbs had the same phone number just with a 312 area code printed on the phone lol.

I never used 10-10-321 but I remember it and services like it.

I have lived in Chicago my entire life, and we, as long as I can remember had a different area code for the City (312) and one for the suburbs (708). Now, it's like 10 area codes for the burbs and three for the City. But, it's only recently I have to dial (button) the area code to call my next door neighbor.

I never used them but I do remember them...that was during our dirt poor years so we didn't own a phone, computer or even cable tv. We did have electricity most months and never had to walk uphill through snow both ways...
