Do you "Search" Before posting?

Contributor: jmex83 jmex83
I had posted something the other day that apparently was not a very original idea (though I thought it was) and someone had posted an almost identical one that same week. I didn't do it intentially, I just failed to do the "search" bar before posting. I did a search (just out of curiousity) for "Social" in the search bar and there was like 6 posts that had asked about "What social networks do you use?". I know that sometimes we don't pay attention to the posts, but that many of the same post? Yikes! I know Im guilty of doing it too, so Im not slammin' anyone or anything. But I was wondering, how many of you actually do a search before you post something?

I always search first, but the search function is at times very picky. An "s" at the end of one little word can make the difference between pages of hits and no hits at all.

I usually search. Sometimes I get tired of the kinda-bad search system though... ):

Even thought I have seen a lot of the threads over that last two years I still search just in case. If I am going to post something that I know has not been talked about, like one I did on Cow Bingo, I won't.

I search, but sometimes I just can't think of the right keywords to put in so I miss it. I'm just terrible with keywords!

I don't search because I don't really post on here. I read all the posts to see if there are any that give me important information. Usually I find some that are helpful.

I usually search first, but many times my questions are not even close to something that would be asked here. Sometimes though, even if you do search, similar posts won't show up on the first few pages. It's no huge deal if you accidentally post something similar one time. I see the SAME exact questions every week though and in those cases, you know the person's not bothering. Accidents happen. It's understandable and most of us here can see the difference between an accident and someone who just wants to ask a vague and already posted question because they can't think of something original to use for point earning.

Like the every week question "is it impossible for women to orgasm?" I swear I see that and "which chocolate do you like best" every freakin' day! Lol

I usually do because I don't want to make anyone mad or have someone get rude with me (or me take it in that way) when they say it's already been asked; if my questions are related to EF.

I always search before starting a thread, sometimes it takes a lot of patience to go through all the old threads to make sure I'm not repeating something others have brought up already.

lol Kendra. I see the same networking sites question and a few others that are constantly at the top of the forums too.

I came up with a really good suggestion for editing posts/threads etc. Well, I thought it was original and it was a great idea! Apparently-I failed to check first because someone had JUST posted it not too soon before me. Which is really strange, because I usually scour the forums and its very rare that I miss something. Im always answering to posts and making them. How on earth could I have missed that? I haven't tried to check yet, to see who it was or what it said-the other persons post-but I think maybe it was in a different area of the forums maybe? I usually frequent a handful of areas/respond and post to those areas, so I may have not seen it because of that. I don't know. But I feel like such a tard when I do that stuff lol. Just wondered if I was the only one that didn't check the search engines as much as I should. *Shrugs*

Now, I have to add that I agree with some of the other posters. The search system definitely needs to be modified. It has brought up stuff that wasn't even pertaining to my question (wrong keywords? maybe).

My wife and I had a question about the forums and how they worked too. We were somewhat confused about how when you respond to a post-does it automatically come directly to the top? Ive seen posts from like two years ago, and I didn't want to respond (and probably started a post about that same thing) just because I wasn't sure if it would move to the "front of the line" or if it would be stuck in limbo sitting back on page 30 still and no one see my response or question on it lmao!!! Stormy was awesome though in explaining it to my wife and I, so I want to thank her for that! Now that we know how things work, it will be better for us to be able to use the search engine. IF it works the way it should, that it lol.

But I still feel bad because I feel like I am one of those lazy people that just forget to use it or just don't want to lol. I guess I like posting and being the center of attention like my wife too LOL!!!! Jk

Anyways, thanks for your responses everyone!

Even if you search and find a post similar to yours it may not be exactly what was asked.

I always search first. Which is why I've started so few threads in the last 2 years that I've been here. I can't usually think up too many things to ask that haven't been asked already.

Um,I search sometimes but, even if it's been asked before I still get the points.Obviously I'm not ridiculous with it but, even if I do posts something I haven't seen it isn't like it's going to make more people respond.

I search ... and then find that the original post was either poorly written, not taken seriously, or was a half-turn of reality away from what I want to ask or talk about.

I was the first to ask if anyone named their toys ... there's been six threads since asking the same thing. Perhaps it's laziness, perhaps it's not giving a rat's ass, or perhaps it's honest ignorance.

I think the search function worked best in early 2011.

Sometimes old discussions are over a year old. Many new members might not see the old postings so it's not always a bad thing to repost an old discussion.

When I was new to the forum, I never searched before posting, only because I didn't know you could. Since then, I always search.

I usually search, but occasionally I forget. Honestly for a while I was afraid to post questions because I was a little intimidated. I am over that now though. I have tried to revive a few threads that asked my same question, but that doesn't always work either.

I do most the time. I'll check the first couple of pages. I figure if the question was old as dirt, it doesn't hurt to bring it back.

I try to, but I usually don't make post. I didn't know about the search function in the beginning and posted the same questions everyone comes up with. Like what is your favorite material. Now I know how to use the forum and I search first.

When I first started Eden, I didn't. I kind of got "scolded" once for not searching. I didn't know you could do that. But now I search before posting a question.

I always search, but the search engine is not flawless, so it kind of depends on your wording what results you are going to get. But yes, most subjects have already been discussed here in some form.

I'm an organisational anal freak.

When I read the Forums and I see something on dildo's in the vibration section I get a little... I'll leave it at that. If I see something not in it's proper section and I want to post something similar or the same question, I might still go ahead and post a new thread in the proper place. Just because I am that anal about it.

I do always search for a new thread I am thinking about posting... but then again, I hardly create new threads. And my reason is simple. There is always a thread that is so close to everything anyone could ever think of posting.

And I would love to see the search engine for the Forums here work a little more effectively than what they are know.

I am glad you started this thread. I think that mostly new Contributors fail to do a search only because they do not understand how things work here in the Forum. I had started two threads about "Which side of the bed do you sleep?" or "What Sport Activities do you like the best?" and have found similar questions were raised by new contributors. I just left a post, saying that he and other people should check first before starting almost the same question. It does get frustrating.

Another possibility is that there are a lot of newcomers who want to "Farm" for points by asking a lot of questions!

I started a new A to Z EdenGames, only after I did a search of that category. It is called, A to Z - CONTRIBUTORS. I wanted to start a game called A to Z - Sex Toys, but that was already started. It would be nice and courteous that every effort is made to check first before starting some kind of question.

I do search a little bit, but if the same post was made a year ago, bringing the topic back to life can be useful.
