Do you thank the driver?

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
Do you thank drivers who stop their cars for you to cross the street safely, at locations where there are no traffic lights or stop signs? Or, do you cross the street without even a brief wave or nod at the driver's direction? My husband has been stopping the car to let people cross, and none of them bothered to give him a quick wave! How rude!

I always do all of the above. I figure it was nice of them not to hit me and all, so a thank you is in order. I hate when people just walk out in front of the car without so much as a glance over.

I personally give a thank you wave. It's my way of saying thanks for not sending me to the hospital.

I nod and hold up my hand, sometimes I mouth thank you.

However, drivers do have a legal obligation to give pedestrians the right of way, so when you stop, you're only cooperating with the law.

I don't do anything... I didn't think I was being rude. I don't jaywlk in traffic, so they're required to stop since I'm in a crosswalk.

I usually give a quick wave, feel like it is the right thing to do to acknowledge them doing something nice.

Big grateful smile, nod and wave, I even say or just move my lips "thank you", so they know how happy I am for it... ^^

Sure, it's the law, but a little smile or wave goes a long way to spreading good will

I always wave, say thank you and smile. It is the correct thing to do for someone who took the time to stop for you.

All three. It's a given to do it in the South - grateful that they're not running over you (like some of them would while plowing past the stop sign in the parking lot, some drivers really seem to think it's the pedestrians' look-out if pavement is involved). I noticed nobody did it when I visited Boston - it's like pedestrians don't acknowledge that they share the same space-time plane with vehicles there. Must be a Northern thing.

I smile, wave, nod, and yell thank you even if I don't think they can hear it. I know in many places it's the law to stop for pedestrians in a walkway, but a lot of people don't and that's the least I can do to thank someone for not running me over.

That's exactly what I thought, not all drivers stop for pedestrians even if they were required by law to stop, and a nice gesture in return goes a long way. If I was the pedestrian, or even just walking in a supermarket parking lot, I'll wave, smile, and mouth thank you to the drivers who let me cross in front of them, it makes everyone's day a little better.
