I do all thee above as well. Usually I am walking and I have my daughter with me in her stroller so when they see they will stop and I will send any of the mentioned gestures.

I always try to acknowledge the drive in someway. I think it is so kind and many people don't show that type of kindness anymore.

i do it all. there are some days where i can be standing across the street from where i live and stand there for 10-20 minutes during rushhour, and one person will stop to let me go when there are many backing up behind him pissed.
i always mouth thank you, give a nod, and wave. i normally get a smile in return.

I wave, nod, smile, mouth thank you, whatever seems appropriate. I always do something because I am appreciative that they let me pass (even though it is the law). I've seen lots of drivers not stop for pedestrians when it's raining, when they're carrying heavy packages, when they're older and clearly have mobility issues, etc. So I always say thank you, and I always try to be sure and stop for pedestrians myself.

All of the above. I also thank the bus and cabbie drivers when exiting, too.

I give a nod. I guess, but it's law to yield for pedestrians so.. how much recognition do drivers want for not being douchebags?

*if* someone stops for me to cross i make darn well sure that i acknowledge it, i wave, smile, and sprint out of their way.... just like i would when someone holds a door for me.... they don't have to, it's a nice thing to do and i feel should be acknowledged.
