Entomophagy (Eating Insects)

Contributor: Steve of Eden Steve of Eden
In countries all across the world people regularly comsume insects as a protein in their diets... Over 1,000 insects are known to be eaten in 80% of the world's nations... With the world's booming population spikes many scientists even say that eating insects could prevent starvation because you can "micro-farm" them since they don't need that much space, food or water... In the United States this is pretty taboo...

This really interests me because a long time ago I ate fried worms at a scholars camp program... and just last year me and some friends ate ant pizza... I would also like to try crickets and some other insects... anyone else have any bug eating experiences??? or want to try it???

I wouldn't mind eating bugs. Maybe they could powder them for protein shakes. Then people would be less opposed to the idea?

Not on purpose! I once ate half a worm it was in my apple.

I've accidentally chomped on a fly. It flew into my mouth when I was wailing because my sister put me in time-out.

I ate a dried cricket last weekend. They were selling them in an international food store and my friend bought them so he could pressure people into eating them. I tried one, just for bragging rights. Crunchy, didn't taste like anything much, washed it right down with water and tried to forget about it. The legs were still attached and they come off in your mouth, so that was weird. I can't say I would eat a bowl of them (unless I were starving, of course), but it wasn't that bad. I won't be seeking them out again, but I'd gladly eat another one to win a bet or something. The ones embedded in lollypops gross me out a lot more. I'd much rather swallow a bug and quickly forget about it than have to suck on it. There were some lollypops with scorpions in them. That was super creepy.

We do eat bugs more than we think, though. The coloring "carmine" is in yogurts and juices and cosmetics, and that is a ground up insect. Not to mention the insects that sneak into our food in miniscule doses all the time. I hear peanut butter, ketchup, and apple sauce all have relatively high legal rates of insect parts in them. Not to gross you out or anything.

Thanks to my copious consumption of salads I'm sure I've eaten quite a few bugs, but the thought makes me VERY unhappy.

Cool story, my friend told me that a local store has dried out crickets... she said they have some covered in cheese powder, some in BBQ flavored powder, and some just plain...I would prefer plain actually for an authentic taste lol... now I just need to get over there...

And yeah, I knew that a higher amount of bug or bug parts get in our food than we think... bad for the people who are grossed out by that I guess lol

Some bugs I like, and some I don't, but on the whole I prefer 'real' food. Ants, I don't like because they're too small and don't satisfy my need to fill my stomach. Worms go some way towards that, but I don't like the texture. As for flies - well, that's just icky! But some of the larger ones are okay.

However, like I said, on the whole, I prefer 'real' food because I like having that satisfied, full feel after I have food. I don't get that from bugs.

So you were watching Cake Boss last night also eh? lol

Not my bag. I would probably get a leg stuck in my teeth and just the thought of that grosses me out.

I HATE insects. They make me gag whether they are alive or dead. I don't like their gross little legs, and the way they..... move. I hate their hairy exoskeletons, their eyes freak me out. I gag thinking about them.

You couldn't pay me enough to eat a bug.

HAHAH! I know a guy named "Carmine". Here's the Wikipedia article on Carmine.

I don't remember where I heard/read it, but I heard/read that they eat ants like popcorn in Brazilian and Argentinian movie theaters.

I think it's totally ok to eat bugs...they'd do the same to you if given a chance. One of my fears is swarms of bugs all over my body.

Me too! I hate bugs (except for Ladybugs and Butterflies), I'll squash every single bug within my reach! I was bitten by a swarm of ants when I was a young kid, and I've been uncomfortable around bugs ever since. So, no matter how wonderful the recipe prepared with insects is, I will not eat it!!!

I certainly wouldn't be afraid to, like other people have said, there are lots of ground up insects in our food anyways.

I've always wanted to try chocolate coated ants, but don't know where to get them.

These aren't classed as bugs, but I saw these deep fried mini crabs - they are so tiny and ya eat the whole thing like potato chips - on a Top Gear episode. Can't find those here either!

Look it up at larger Japanese supermarkets, they might have those fried mini crabs in the snack section.
