Exotic pet owners ?

Contributor: Chirple Chirple
Do you own an "exotic" pet ? Pinning down the definition of "exotic" is tricky, but generally it's just "uncommon", things like lizards, snakes, sugar gliders, skunks, et cetera.

Some depend on opinion. I'd call a reef tank "exotic" because of the commitment as opposed to just a goldfish. Some people think ANY birds are exotic, et cetera.

And if you don't, would you ? Or want more / different ?

Personally, I have an axolotl, which I would call "exotic" because people generally have no idea what it is. And I'd love to have a skunk when I have an actual house with different rooms for separation, I think the odd-colour skunks they've bred for can be really pretty, too.

That thing is frick'n sweet!

My cat is pretty weird...

I'd be ok with a pet raccoon, squirrel, or skunk.

I actually had two pet raccoon's, they are awesome. We had them as babies, we found them on the side of the road with a dead one near by. They were so friendly and can right up too us, so we took them home. We only kept George and Cooper for about 6months and gave them to a lady who was raccoon crazy like some people are with cats. Last she told us George was a fat lzy eating boy and Cooper was a horny little guy with a family.

It was soo cool having them and they were awesome. They were both boys and we use to here sucking noises all the time. They would go crazy on themselves to get themselves off!

I currently only have fish and cats, but we are planning snakes and lizards as well.

Sugar gliders are the cutest things ever!

Most of these exotic pets seem to require a different set of needs than the average dog or cat. I'm not sure if I would have the time to look after them realistically, so I'm going to go with no for now.

I have hermit crabs, which may or may not be exotic! My largest one is molting right now, but the other two love running around and digging in their synthetic coconut bedding!

I had two Anole lizards, they were awesome up to the point where I had to feed them live crickets and the damn crickets would often escape.

I've had a few types of snakes in the past, a praying mantis, tadpole/frogs and I'd love to own a snake again. I miss having one chill out on my shoulders while I go about my daily business or whilst going on a walk.

I have owned two hedgehogs, but currently no exotics. We will have to wait and see what wanders into my life later.

When I was but an infant my grandparents had a young gorilla, boa constrictor, performing dogs, and other animals. Animal trainers, got to love it. They rescued the gorilla at a young age. It was very sick so they rehabilitated it and then donated it to a wildlife reserve.

I love my bearded dragon, they act like little dogs only in lizard bodies. Also I love chinchillas, but don't have the space for one at the moment, so I just get to play with the ones at my work (I work at a pet store). I will be inheriting 2 leopard tortoises and an amazon parrot someday as well.

I have had traditional pets (cats & dogs) and I can't imagine owning something more exotic. Most reptiles and especially snakes creep me out!

Currently I have 6 cats, but in the past I have had Water Dragons, Rats, and Tree Frogs. I would LOVE to have a skunk though! They are so cute and such sweethearts!

aww, i would love if they would jsut let more people do that again. These animals need loving homes, and not all of them can go to a refuge location!

have you ever seen the orchid flower praying mantis? I cant recall exactly what they were called, but they have what looks like pink orchid flower petals on them, as camouflage. They're so pretty, we've been considering getting one!

We have a saltwater tank, a Tegu, 2 Ball Pythons, a 9' Burmese Python, 2 Bearded Dragons, 4 Snapping Turtles, and a few other pets I've never considered these exotic, but since you mentioned lizards and snakes I thought I'd post about them My closest friend has a skunk - he is AMAZING. I want a Coatimundi myself, but it will be awhile before I get one
