Facebook friends - how do you manage your "friend" list?

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
What are your criteria on confirming people to become your "friend" on Facebook?
I have a lot of "friend" requests sitting on my page, especially from acquaintances that I barely know. I am not interested in adding them to my "friend" list, but I also don't want to hurt their feelings by rejecting their requests, what should I do? I hate wasting time removing posts from "friends" that have nothing to do with me.

Dear fellow EFers, please post your responses to THIS thread only, I've hit the button too many times, and there are now 6 almost identical posts. SORRY!

Some of those are people looking for new friends but some are bots. Those I'm wary of.

My FL is truly friends, coworkers, family and a few stray ones I love to keep up with (for instance, the guys in my favorite indie band!!). If someone sends me a FR that I don't want to accept, and it's a person who I have little-to-no past or present with, then I won't accept it. If it's someone I have a past with or recently met and don't really fancy being friends, I accept it and then delete it about a month later. I keep my Friends List under 100.

My FB is mainly for Eden related stuff, so if folks want to friend me I accept them. It just helps to spread the the Eden love. I have only had a few that I had to remove from my list.

If it's someone I kinda know, I'll usually add them. If there's no further interaction, I remove them later. I reject friends request from people I don't know at all, though, even if we have mutual friends and stuff.

I just delete/deny the request if I don't want them on my page. I also try to only add people I've met in person.

I'm very picky as to who I add to my personal page and I have no problem denying it if it's someone I don't know well enough to add to my Facebook.

For the one I use for my blog and Eden stuff, I base it on who they are mutual friends with or how many mutual friends they have.

I only add people I know very well. I have to want to see status updates from them and want them to see my status updates. Otherwise there's no point in being facebook friends.

if idk someone, i won't friend them. if i know them, but not that well, sometimes i'll friend them, but about every 6 months or so, i delete people. if i don't see them or talk to them on facebook, i delete them.

I keep two lists. My close friends get access to my entire Facebook, while acquaintances can just send me messages and see the limited profile. I do this because several of my family members and co-workers wanted to cause drama over my not accepting them. As soon as I "Friended" them but denied all access, it finally shut them up.

I'll reject it usually the first time, I'll add them the second time and if there's no interaction or they get on my nerves with their posts I'll delete them

The only people I accept are legitimate friends and family.

Our view is: that's why it's a "friends" list and not an "acquaintance" list. If they're not truly friends, family, or others who have a significant place in your life, they don't belong on your list! Otherwise, you get 10 million updates, statutes, requests, invites...blah,blah,bl ah...that you don't need and won't read!

You're absolutely correct, Facebook should have more categories.

You can always click "hide all posts by this user." I enter a lot of blog giveaways and "liking" the blog page is usually mandatory or at least gets an extra entry..believe me, I was relieved when I discovered this feature! Now I only see the posts I'm really interested in.

I spend very little time on Facebook. I probably visit my page about once a month or less.

I don't "friend" anyone I don't know. If it's someone I might know, I PM them and ask "Where do we know each other from?" If I don't get a response or it's a response that kind of squicks me out, I don't friend them.

My own father's friend request has been sitting in my pile for months now. He has some very weird political views, and I really don't want my page linked with some of his bizarre conspiracy theories. I LOVE my Daddy, but I don't want him to be my "friend" on FB. I mean, he's in his 70s! I don't want a 20 page manifesto on how the government is poisoning us with driveway sealer, mosquito spray, natural gas or how having dogs cause cancer. Really.

If someone requests me and I don't really want to add them but I don't want to offend them? Usually I'll just leave it sitting in the request box. If I don't care, I'll just deny it.

I'll usually just hit "Not Now" and forget about it for several months.

I use FB a lot for networking. I set people up into lists so that if I want one post to only be seen by certain people with that interest, I can direct it just to them. Also, I hide a lot of people as well. I think I enjoyed FB a lot more before I used it for networking, but I spend a lot less time on it now that I have to wade through so much stuff.
