Family Reunions: Do you have them? What do you do at them? How much do you know about your family?

Contributor: Beck Beck
Yesterday was my hubbies family reunion. Every year they have one on the second Sunday of August. Everyone gathers for food and to record in the family journal. There are images of the first ancestors all the way back to Pilgrim days. It's really cool!

My family doesn't have anything like this. We did have one family reunion once, but that was a long time ago and no one really stays in contact. We have no clue about our family history either.

I'm curious: how many families have reunions? What is your tradition at these reunions? And how much do you know about your family history?

We had one family reunion when I was a kid. It was pretty miserable because my family is Italian and everyone is SO freaking loud. I'm not really like that so I end up overwhelmed when they all get together.

One of my cousins keeps an up to date scrapbook/journal thing with that side of the family's history. She knows quite a bit and will share (at length) with anyone interested. Bad thing is that she's VERY self absorbed and will talk for hours with no concept that people might have things to do. No one really asks her about it for this reason, but it does exist.

I don't know anything about my dad's side because they're all too busy being crazy to track such things. Plus pretty much everyone in that family was either married a gazillion times or cheated regularly, so getting a fact based history would be near impossible.

Never had one. Just the ones during holiday's. But it would be fun to see people you don't get to see or never met

We used to have one, but haven't in years. The boy's family has one though.

I went once and I remember the distinct feeling of "no one here actually likes each other, why are we doing this?"; I would not attend one today.

I try and go every 2 or 3 years. We seem to always have a conflict in our schedules. My parents go every year. We mostly eat and visit. We have a giant family tree that shows how people are related and all the branches. We add births and deaths and the dates. Then there is usually a big softball game for whoever wants to play. It is kinda fun, but it is 5 hours away for us and like I said it usually is the same time as other events on our calander.

We don't have regular family reunions. There's always some sort of gathering (i.e. weddings) going on every few years, so we treat those as family reunions.

My father's side of the family gets together for most holidays and somewhere I have that side's genealogy report with our coat of arms. My mother's side used to be closer but now only really gets together for weddings and funerals.

We don't have reunions. When it comes to family history, I'm the only one who is interested, but being aboriginal, it's extrememly difficult to find records of ancestors.

My family on my dad's side is either dead or the ones remaining are over 70.

My mom's family is either dead or too spread out.

No family reunions, but I do have massive info about our family on dads side--probably has to do with my great great great grandfather, he is the famous one that died at Bunker Hill.

I remember some from back when I was a kid, elementary school age and younger. I miss it. I wish our family still did it. Even our holiday get togethers are dwindling in the number of people showing. I was SUPER bummed that my cousin didn't have his 4th of July get together, it's my favorite part of July. It's like that on both sides .

We've had them ocaisionally on both sides. Sometimes we go, sometimes not. Mostly we eat and hang out. The journal thing sounds cool. I wish we had that kind of historical record.

It's an annual gathering, but we don't keep any historical info, formally anyway

I avoid my family these days, I enjoyed them as a child before family drama.

Not a big priority in my family. They may have happened when I was an infant, but nothing that I can clearly recall.

We used to have them...we don't anymore. My family sucks and has reached a level of immaturity and closed-mindedness that I consider to be disgusting.

My family does them yearly as well, but I rarely attend. I keep meaning to bring my husband up and let the family meet him, but we're on 6 years now and still haven't gotten around to it. As far as what we do, we rent a campground with cabins and everyone stay on site. It's right by a river and we do a lot of hiking and canoeing.

My family doesn't keep a journal, but we do have lots of history written down. I have most of it, since I'm the genealogy buff of the family, but it's not exactly in a journal format.
