Flaggers Gone Wild

Contributor: Bme Bme
Have you noticed more flags lately? I have seen a lot. Until recently, I had only seen one. Now I have seen at least six in the last few weeks.

Not flags on controversial stuff. Like I just saw one on a question asking if you were circumcised. It was flagged as offensive. If you are that easily offended then perhaps this site is not for you.

I have also seen flags that seem to be retaliatory when people make comments that are positive to the reviewer. It seems to be just on certain people as others make similar comments and do not get flagged.

Perhaps the rules for flagging need to be reviewed with those who are misusing flags. I am not sure if EF does this or not.

I haven't been paying attention to that little flag -- I'm sure the admins (that might probably be Stormy) will handle those flags with good judgement.

I haven't, but now I want to hunt around and see them. Yeah, I've only seen very few myself. People are generally pretty cool here, and even when I get into heated discussions, it's been handled well.

Flag box looks exactly like the reply box and it is pretty close to the same size. I could see how someone could accidentally do it. I think I'm at like 100 posts and I've been flagged only once. Being flagged ain't a death sentence, I'm sure they have admins that review all flags.

I'v gotten flagged before on things that I couldn't understand why anyone would flag them.

I was flagged a while back, before the new changed were implemented and point farming was a big issue. I had left a friend a comment on their wall with just little icons telling them i loved them and it was then flagged as spam, though i didnt realize that would happen and quickly went over the rules and regulations again and found what i had done did qualify as spam (especially at a time when many we're doing such things at an all time high at the time just for the points).

I don't see stuff flagged often here though. In one of my more recent reviews from may someone flagged a comment that was a simple "thank you" on my review as spam. I'm not sure if it was a mistake or that the profile in question was someone who was doing this on multiple accounts. At least it wasn't a "TY!" comment and they took they time to write the words. And i know i dont always have a question or something to comment on after reading a review and will just write the review a simple thank you to let them know i read the review and appreciated the input.

I've only used the flag button twice. I believe I flagged the same person -- whoever he/she was, posted escort service ads on the forums page in the middle of the night.

A little. In fact, someone flagged me for pointing out at TOS violation. Retaliatory I'm sure. Been a bit of spamming going on recently too.

I haven't noticed any but then again, I hadn't been looking. I have been here 2 years now and only flagged once.

I was flagged as both personally offensive and violating terms of service by a girl after she copied one of my threads a week after I posted it, and then said something along the lines of "it's too much work to search things just so that I don't offend people." She didn't really like it when I told her that you have to open exactly one page to do a search, and that some people just want the forums to be a nice, spam-free place. What pissed me off was that she flagged the first girl who politely suggested that she do a search as well. The thread's been taken down now, though (along with a ton of her other threads), so I guess at least the flags do something.

Anyways, the point of that story is that I feel like a good chunk of flagging is retaliatory. And when emotions run high, like they are right now, there is likely to be more anger and retaliation.

Pretty much exactly the same thing that happened to me. Childish BS.

Just a little side note - flags are permanent - they can't be removed so some of what you're seeing may be two or three years old and it's almost always a situation where someone got their feelings hurt and wanted to attempt to get someone in trouble.

Hell, I've been flagged a time or two myself.

If people have the option of doing so on any website, they will flag or downvote just because they can.

True story.
