Flash Rob: Riots in London, England 2011

Contributor: Ansley Ansley
Do we have any Edenites in London? If so, have you experienced any looting on your street?

It seems the original protest was legit, but now people are organzing mobs to set streets on fire and then loot the shops. This is one confirmed fatality as a result of the riots. How would you propose England's government handle this situation? Should the no gun policy for law enforcement be revoked in order to control the masses?

CNN has a good write-up on this. Assuming the reports are accurate, it's a bunch of riffraff being opportunistic.

I hope any EF members (and their family and friends) are safe and ok.

I really don't have an opinion. I only found out about the riots this morning and I'm not sure if the reports I'm hearing are accurate or not.

The only fact I have at the moment is that the protests started with the death of Mark Duggan. Is what has followed people legitimately decrying the actions of law enforcement? Or is it the criminal element trying to breed chaos during the confusion? I don't know.

I think I'm leaning toward the latter of the two. It sucks all the way around, though.

I heard about these riots the other day on NPR. My first thought was that you'd never have riots like this in the US. Sure, they've happened before...but they'd never to go this extent for this long.

The BBC had some good insights into this too.

I think I'm most confused over why this all happened in the first place. There seem to be previous cases of police officers killing people, but I was pretty sure that the police force in England were not allowed to carry firearms. So, this really is all news to me.

My first thought was also that this would never happen here, but that's because we have a SWAT teams that rivel no other and I don't think there's ever been a President in history that would or will hestitate to call in the National Guard.

The riots after the death of Martin Luther King went on for days. My father said he actually carried a gun to work as he was threatened one day on his way to work (he was working on his Masters, but working in a Union Office at the time.) What about the riots also in Chicago during the Democratic Convention in 1968, or the protests at some colleges about the war in Viet Nam during the 60s? The presence of, and murder by the National Guard actually precipitated the violence.

People have a right to non-violently protest. But, when "protest" becomes simply a reason to get yourself a new TV and computer, and people are dying it has gone too far.

Sure we do. NYC, LA, Chicago and many other cities have had prolonged race riots that lasted days - in the recent past as well.
