I have a lot of trouble making friends now, too. I'm incredibly shy and quiet, so approaching strangers has never been my thing. :/

The easiest way for me to make friends in real life, take my poodle for a walk in the park, and I end up with quite a few pooch-loving friends. If the other dog owner appears to be friendly, I'll smile and say Hi and start up a conversation, easy as that...and having the only perfectly groomed black Standard Poodle in town helps! My husband doesn't do so well with people in the friendship department, he keeps a blank face while he walks our pooch by himself and never made any friends, people I know will stop and ask him "how's your wife?" but never strike up a proper conversation with him. When he's back from the walk, he'll complain to me about that and my response "What do you expect people to do, you weren't exactly giving off a friendly aura!'"

back home I used to play MTG and go to all kinds of things but here in upstate NY I don't feel like I belong.. I'm a Country girl and I don't compete with all these city folks... I feel like I'm back in middle school the fat short girl with horrible hair and glasses. I just don't belong

The older we are, the harder it is to make friends. Not sure why, but probably because we all have hectic lives w/ kids, jobs, obligations, etc. I have lived in L.A. for almost 2 yrs and the only friend I have is my husband. I like the couple of girls I work with, but 2 of them are 21 (and I'm 42)! I guess I am fine with the way things are. I think the older I get, I don't care as much either.

I find it really hard to make friends too, I've always had a hard time talking to people that I don't know well which doesn't lend itself to making friends.

Same here. I've always found it hard making friends, and it seems adulthood has only made it more difficult. Sure, there are people at work that I'm friendly with, but we don't exchange numbers, or hangout or anything. The only real friend I have is my husband.

I make friends easily when I'm away from home, but it seems a bit harder at home for some reason.

Darnit...no application form. xD
I'm in much the same boat, all my "real" friends are back in CT and I've only got maybe one or two online friends I even get to talk to anymore.

I'd say browse the web to see if there's any local "club" type events suited to your interests, attend a few, and do your best not to be shy when you go...it's a lot easier to make friends with people when you share a common interest after all. =)

I have tried the whole play date for my kids, so i could meet other people. That doesn't work because something always ends up keeping the other parent from being able to make it. I would love to make friends here. I moved to where i live now, five years ago and i still have no friends here.
