Fur

Contributor: Cherrylane Cherrylane
I've been out in a bunch of clothing stores recently and have noticed that fur (fake fur) is back in style with a vengeance. Basically every place I've been have had at least one fake fur vest for sale.

I just happen to already have a fur vest that is completely diva fabulous and is now entirely "on trend." However, the fur is real. Now before someone scolds me outright, I DID NOT purchase the vest. It is a hand-me down that originally belonged to a wealthy grandmother or great grand mother or something or other and is very very old, legitimately "vintage."

Still, I have some reservations wearing it. I suspect most people would just assume it's like the softest fake fur vest ever, but it still makes me a little uncomfortable. And even then, i'm not entirely sure why as I'm totally fine wearing leather...

Do you think it's okay to wear the vest? Would you? Why/why not?

I don't like to support the fur trade, but this is definitely not the case in your situation. You've received this fur as a hand me down. This animal has been long dead and your money isn't going towards supporting the fur industry. In my opinion, vintage furs are fine to own and wear. It would be such a shame to let it go to waste.

I agree with this.

I probably wouldn't personally wear it. Fur creeps me out. It feels too much like a dead animal to me. I can't do it. However, the vest is vintage and was handed down. You didn't buy it personally. If anyone has issue with you wearing it, simply explain that to them. It won't bring the animal back to life to throw it away. Really only helpful not to buy new ones in hopes that lack of demand will stop the killing of animals for fur.

I agree with Rarity. You're not the one who bought it, and shouldn't feel bad wearing it, why waste a nice vest that can keep you really warm?

I have no problem with real fur or leather. In fact I am currently shopping for a new leather coat. Of course with leather the animal is almost fully used between meat, dog food, even the bones are used. Not so much with some furs.

Some people still get angry at vintage fur, illogical as that is. If you're in an area where there aren't a lot of those people, go for it!

I'm not into vests really, but if I was I would have no problem with wearing it. In my experience, people don't really care that much if you are wearing fur or not. If you have lots of friend that would comment on it, maybe it wouldn't be worth it. I don't see any harm in wearing it though.

I think you should wear it, and not feel bad about it. You certainly shouldn't trash it, that'd be even more wasteful than just killing an animal for its fur.

It really depends on your area and the people you know.

I think it's terrible to try to shame someone because you suspect they're wearing fur - there are very good fakes and you don't know the history of the garment even if it was real (older coats can be re-made to look more modern, also, another way of recycling).

I have a very old and torn fur coat (I think it's from the 60s, but I don't really know) that I bought to use for craft projects. I don't feel bad about using it - it would have just been trashed otherwise, so why not let it have one more use, at least ?

I own leather shoes - one pair is about 110 years old, another I got on eBay for $14 (originally $250) because they needed to be fixed.

I wouldn't want to buy something like that new, but as a historical object or something that wasn't going to be used or wasted, I think recycling is good.

it's fine. just don't say that it's real & no one will get huffy about it. fur came back in fashion last year. i'm not really a fan of fur, though (real or fake). i've just never really liked how it looks.

I don't think you should feel bad wearing it. It's a hand-me-down, so you're not supporting the fur trade. There's some pretty impressive fake furs out there, so if you're really worried about what people will think, you can always say it's fake.

For me, whether or not I would wear fur it depends a lot on what kind of fur it is - rabbit fur, for example, does not bother me because it's usually collected by shearing. I'm okay with leather and deerskin, as well, because odds are good that the rest of the animal was also put to good use, and neither are endangered. In general, though, I prefer fake fur.

I don't buy real fur. I don't support things like that. I'm fine with leather because it's a byproduct of an animal that is not endangered and that we have as a main food source, but I still try not to buy leather.

I would think about it this way...the animal already sacrificed itself. You said it's vintage. To me, you might as well wear it and make the animal's sacrifice worth it. I don't support creating new products like this, especially since a lot of the animals are endangered now, but at the time yours was created, the situation was probably different. I am set to inherit a HUGE winter fur coat made entirely out of mink. It's not my style, but I will keep it and not have it destroyed. I won't feel ashamed for having acquired it. It's from the 30's, gorgeous, and would be an even bigger waste to have it not be admired.

I agree - I think it is fine to wear it. I actually think it would be worse to throw it out. If you don't want to wear it, that's another story, but then I think the best option would be to donate it. An animal died to make it, I think it is more respectful to use it rather than trash it.

Oh my. Lol I was actually just on a rampage about this at the mall last weekend. I hate fur. I will never wear it. Seriously, it is just heart shattering to know how they kill the animals for their fur. I would suggest everyone researching it. It'd shock even an animal hater, I think. I'm totally against it. I don't even like faux fur because a lot of times it's real. You can research for more info on that. You can tell whether it's real or not by pushing a pen through it. I can't remember exactly which is which, but if the pen goes through I think that means it's really fake, but I'm not sure! It could be the other way around. Either way, I ain't taking a chance on stealing a poor bunnies fur. Screw that! I'll freeze before I ever wear fur.

If less people would wear and buy fur that means less killing. IMO it's NEVER OK. But if it's handed down or something like that then whatever, it won't hurt to keep it. I personally would not wear it, but if a close fam member had real fur and passed it down to me I couldn't throw it out. Now going out and buying fur, no way!

LaUr3n, I'll offer to buy it from you if you really don't want to keep it around ... I absolutely adore the 1930's mink coats.

On the subject itself, wear it if you like it, Cherrylane. If you're surrounded by PETA zombies tell 'em it's a fake.

Funny. I remember one of our members a year or two ago commenting: "PETA harasses rich women who wear fur because it's safer than harassing leather-clad bikers."

I, personally, don't support the fur trade at all. My mother tried to give me one of my grandmother's fur coats and when I said I though fur was cruel, she said, "Well, it's old. That animal would have died a natural death by now anyway." She's free to wear it, but I won't.

Seeing as leather is usually a byproduct of the meat industry (which, like it or not, is not going anywhere) I do use leather.

But, not fur. I wouldn't wear it.

But, it's up to you.

That's kind of how I've been leaning. It's also one of the warmest things I own, which is bizarre because I have a ton of nice outdoor winter clothes and jackets as well. I do not know....

I dunno about the rich women being safer than the bikers. I know some little old ladies (my grandmother being one of them) that are very protective of their fur accessories and would probably be very scary to a PETA drone that harassed or otherwise accosted them because of the fur.

I think it's totally fine personally. If an animal's going to die I think it's only fair to use every part of it. Just watch out for Peta paint.

p.s. I don't really understand the double standard that we have with fur vs. leather. I don't see them as being all that different when it comes to source.

To be honest, if I was in that situation, I wouldn't keep the vest. I just can't handle it.

The only animal-related thing I wear is for leather shoes, but that's largely out of necessity. I have awkwardly shaped feet, so it's very hard to find leather shoes that fit, never mind finding non-leather shoes that fit. And the only comfort I get from wearing leather is knowing that the rest of the animal is going to be used for food.

Haha I have a fur coat and wore it to a lesbian party. BAD IDEA most of the girls were vegan and I ended up telling everyone it was fake. I think its OK to wear leather and fur but make sure you are buying it from a credible source.
