Getting "bugged" out

Contributor: Ash1141 Ash1141
Anyone else here getting invaded by stinkbugs or fruit flies? Ugh. The stinkbugs have mostly left my house but now I have occasional fruit flies. There is no fresh fruit in my house anymore. I swear they just like tormenting me! I'm hoping they all die off with the cold weather.

fruit flies can live in your kitchen sink or around your trash. i had a fruit fly problem w/ the kitchen sink in my apartment 2 yrs ago. 2 girls in my class said that if you put out a bowl w/ apple cider vinegar & a few drops of... i wanna say dish soap, then it will help b/c they're attracted to it & it kills them.

We did recently have a number of house spider nests hatch and are currently covered in tiny spider babies.

Both, actually. Those fucking red & black stinkbug things cover half the outside of the house during the summer. It's finally getting cold enough here that they're starting to head off, finally. Boo!

I've never actually had experience with a stink bug. Which I'm thankful for.

Nah, I don't mind them. We "catch" them using feather dusters and then put the dusters outside overnight so they can walk away to the bushes.

I end up with fruit flies every time I get bananas. I always leave one sitting too long & eggs in the stem hatch, I guess.

My method for getting rid of fruit flies (aside from spraying poison stuff).

Fill a cup to the very top, half & half with water & vinegar. Add a few drops dish soap. Set cup in fruit fly infested area. (I usually do a couple & put in different rooms. Sometimes I'll toss in something sweet- fruit, honey- for extra attractiveness).

The reason it works: Vinegar smells nice to fruit flies (like fermenting fruit) & they go check it out. Normally they can hang out on or near the water without problems. But soap breaks the surface tension of the water & the fruit flies get sucked in & drown.

I was skeptical about this working, but seriously, if you leave the fruit fly trap overnight in a badly infested area, the bottom of the cup will be black with bodies in the morning.

My bug wins: I had a black widow with a big web going between my back door & screen door the other day. Almost ran smack into it.

I doubt there are eggs in the bananas. Really.
However, flies have an excellent sense of smell and bananas are rather smelly (in a yummy way) and they will come from many meters away to find your bananas. :3

I thought this was only happening to me!
My apartment is very clean, but at the moment it's INFESTED with fruit flies. There's nothing even around.

There can be fruit fly eggs on fruit. That's why they ask you if you are traveling with fruit when you enter California. It sounds gross, but it's not that big of a deal health-wise. On bananas or anything with a rind they're discarded with the peel. If you're dealing with something like a peach where you eat the skin, just wash it well.

"This is because they can travel into our homes, unbeknownst to us, as larvae on the fruit we buy. The adults lay their eggs, invisible to the naked eye, on bananas and other fruits, which later hatch while the fruit is in our fruit bowls." (Quoted from: Fruit Flies)

They could be spreading from a neighbor if your apartment connects.
