Girl Scouts Cookie Time! What are you getting?

Contributor: Missy27 Missy27
I enjoy this time of year much more now that I don't have a girl scout in the house and cases and cases of cookies tempting me for a month. Because they only come around once a year, I truly love getting girl scout cookies. My favorite are Lemonade and Carmel Delight (or Samoa's) some places. What are you favorite of these yummy treats?

My house is filled with tons and tons of GS cookies, and I'm going to declare my rather unpopular opinion that none of them are very good. I'm not a fan.

THIN MINTS. I've been known to eat an entire sleeve in one sitting. No self control when it comes to them.

Debbie Downer alert. I think it's a racket and I won't participate. $4.25 for a box of 16 cookies? No way.

I remember when you paid less and got more cookies! One of many reasons I don't buy too often. When I do, younger family members are happy I help out.

I wasn't allowed to be a girl scout when I was a kid. My dad was determined to help my oldest sister sell the most cookies in town, and then my mom was stuck on delivery duty

I'll have some of each in my house as I am the leader of not 1 but 2 troops. While I agree the price is high and you can get the same cookies in the Family Dollar brand there is a lot more to the cookie sale than just selling cookies. If done right there are numerous things that the girls can learn that many don't get at home. Goal setting, counting money, business etiquette, budgeting, how to approach people just to name a few.

Thin Mints! I always wanted to buy a whole refrigerated truck full and then wait till it was way off of GS cookie season and sell them for $20 a box!!! I am sure people would buy them!!! It's my evil capitalist plan to exploit the Thin Mint addicts (like me) among us. The problem is, the cookies might not make it to mid year...and I would weigh 2000 pounds and have a reality show about me!

Dear "Debbie". It's not a racket, it's a fundraiser! Speaking as the mom of a prior GS who used the cookie money to pay for many trips and events, the profit the GS's make is not huge(per box), but in total it adds up and does a LOT of girls a LOT of good. The inner city and limited resource troops get the most benefit from those cookie sales and would not be able to do so many fun and educational things they do without them. Thus, Stormy, open up your purse, and forget "buying" a box of cookies. Just make a $4.25 cent donation to a very good cause in support of many young woman and enjoy your tasty little reward of 16 very yummy cookies!!! In fact, you can make much larger donations to most organizations and not even get one cookie!

I agree...but please, don't forget the benefit that the cookie money gives directly to supporting all those activities, like GS camp, for a lot of girls, some of whom might otherwise never get the chance to be there.

Then do what we do. Give the donation and check the box that let's the GS's donate the cookies to our servicemen. On overseas deployments, these are certainly very much appreciated by our troops...or so I have heard from a couple of them who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

You know, there are a few different companies that make them. I am wondering if it is your regional baker? Ours, for the Southern USA is routinely...awesome.

There are two main bakeries, but I don't think that's it. I'm a homemade cookie person, and I tend to think all store bought cookies are dry. The other people in my area rave about the GS cookies, and I will have thousands of boxes in my living room for a month or so....but I'm just not a fan.

way too expensive, the cookies arent that great and you get so few. It is a shame what they have come to. I also read that the organization supports others that support abortion so im out. These little girl scouts work hard and get only a very small portion back from sales.

Girl Scouts do NOT support Planned Parenthood or any other organization that supports abortion. This is a rumor that has been going around for a few years and always rears its ugly head at cookie time.

They do get a small portion but that is better than nothing and the skills that they gain are very important.

Exactly, we troop is able to pay for 20 girls to go to camp this summer with our cookie profits. Not bad when camp is over $200 per girl and we live in a town of about 3500.
