Has the quality of resturant food gone down??

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
We go out at least twice a week with friends and at least twice a week as a couple.

In the last year we notice the quality of a vast number of chain restaurant foods has gone down. Steaks at chain steakhouses are fattier cuts, baked potatoes are smaller...etc.

We wonder if in a bad economy, these chains are using cheaper cuts and cheaper products overall??

Anyone else notice this too? Anyone in the food industry have any comment they can add?

Yes, cutting costs means undercutting our health. Also, the more crowded a restaurant, the lower quality food. Avoid going on holidays. Go a bit after.

I disagree with the "more crowded a restaurant, the lower quality food."

I have gone to many popular restaurants, even during the holidays and have been going to them for years but food quality has never changed. I thought it was fabulous when I first went, and it is now.

I find that mom and pop restaurants, with less people going in and out of them on a daily basis than many of the restaurants I go to with 1-2 hour waits minimum during dinner time, have a harder time keeping quality because they have more people to go through. So, for produce they have to fight with other places to get the cheapest and best.

I have seen food prices go up at some places, but the food remains the same. They might charge for something they didn't charge for before...and a majority of the places I go to now like to slide in a tip on your check no matter how many people are there with you.

Unless it's a place like Sullivans steak house, I wouldn't get a steak at any chain restaurant. Portions were always too large, so smaller portions isn't necessarily a bad thing. The places I eat have great food, but I cook most often. Don't do chains that often, except for a select few (PF changs, Chilis, etc).

The regular food at the chains I've been to are fine though.

I have noticed it too! I think it's been more than just this past year, maybe the last couple of years. I hate to name chains and upset anyone. X-) It's not just restaurants either! A lot of foods at the grocery store have either gone up in price or have less product in the package. My only guess is that it has to do with ethanol. I remember a few years back they were saying that if we started to use corn for fuel it would a chain reaction and drive the cost of food up. Don't know if that's true or not, but the cost of food is up!
