Have/would you give blood?

Contributor: Princess-Kayla ♥ Princess-Kayla ♥
We had a blood drive at my college today, and I figured I'd ask the EF community. Would you give blood? Have you already?

If you have, would you do it again?

I've only done it twice before.
I do always feel awesome knowing that I'm helping a good cause though.
Good for you for doing it.

I would love to do it but I have very low blood pressure. I have had transfusions so I appreciate those who do donate.

I give blood as often as I'm able to, sadly I do get rejected due to my rather low iron. But they encourage me to come back as soon as possible as I'm O-. I may not be donating that much anymore since I hate taking iron pills and ingesting various foods with iron, (constipation anyone?) it really screws with my regular digestive processes.

The iron supplements are pretty evil. When I drink enough water they're lots less evil, but still evil.

I have before and I love it.

I have a weird thing about taking blood and having needles in my arm and shit so it's a rather stress free and enjoyable experience for me.

However, last time I did I fainted several hours afterwards and my friend couldn't wake me up and had to call an ambulance. When they got there they couldn't get my heart to speed up like it should so they took me to the ER and had me on a drip and other shit all night. I haven't given blood since. I will again though. It's just... fainting like that was scary.

I have and I would do it again. I think it's important to help out if you can.

I give blood almost every 2 months exactly. I wish they'd let us do it more often. Safely you can give blood every two weeks in good health because your blood cells replace themselves about every two weeks. But because of health risks for most people they set that limit. I have a friend who gets plasma and platelets regularly. I also know a few people who get RBCs often. It's because of these people that I donate as often as possible. I'm O+ so it helps a lot of people. It's one of the only perks to being a heavier individual. I also wish I could get the platelet donation to work. I have 3x the average number. This makes me clot EXTREMELY fast. I have to take aspirin before I donate otherwise I clot up before I can fill a blood bag. Good news is if I'm attacked I could probably drive myself to the hospital without bleeding out on the way.

I was a regular donor before I became ineligible for health reasons. As long as I drank enough water the few days before the visit, the blood draw went smoothly, with no problems. Occasionally I'd have a bruise on the inside of my elbow.

I've been a card carying doner since I was 16. When I turned 17 I started to donate double red becuase I have an O-type blood. It's actually really relaxing for me and I do love the free snacks and teeshirts I always get.

I have to wait a while till I donate again though because I got my first tattoo in September.

I can't cause I always faint, even for a blood test where they only take one vile. It's fun freaking out the people who are waiting to get their blood taken though.

I have done it in the past, but I can't anymore. On meds that preclude me from donating, plus I have really bad veins anymore and it is just too hard for them to find a usable one.

I've tried both giving whole blood and giving plasma and neither work well with my body. I have small, deep veins that bruise like crazy!

I tried giving blood a few times. The first time it took them 5 times to get the needle in my arm than had to keep stripping the hose I sat there for 18 minutes and they didnt even get a pint. It didnt seem worth it everyone else was in and out their bags were full, nope not mine! Than I waiting for three hours another time at the mall to give blood with my dad and they couldnt even get the needle in my arm. Three people tried several times but did not manage to get the needle in! Then they sent me on my way! I just say forget it for now, but maybe I will at a later date.

For most of my life I haven't been able to get to the weight requirement, but when I finally did i was really excited to donate. Everything went fine, and as a preventative measure I ate 4 cookies, a bagel, and drank 3 bottles of juice afterwards. I waited 30 minutes till I felt okay, and then my friend and I started walking home. I fainted halfway there - literally just started feeling super dizzy and nauseous and just collapsed - and then felt incredibly sick for the rest of the evening. I think I was lucky to have my friend there and be walking rather than driving. I want to donate again, but I no longer within walking distance of a donation center, and I am terrified of fainting while I'm driving. That would be really dangerous.

I did it once and was on the couch for the rest of the day. I don't know if I'll do it again. I sure wish it didn't wipe me out so much; I have O positive blood which is the universal donor.

O Negative is the Universal Donor.

Yeah. O positive can donate to any other positive, but not to anyone who is negative. So in emergencies, when they can't take the time to blood type the patient, the O negative is what they grab.

I'm glad I was able to donate as often as I did, before I became ineligible.
